When I came to Shippensburg for my freshman year, I had a plan. I was going to get my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, move back to Philadelphia, get my Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at Thomas Jefferson University, and begin my life of luxury. All I had to do was pass my introductory biology courses -which should be like all those biology courses I took in high school – right? Wrong. Long story short, I withdrew from my first Biology class both fall and spring semester.
Â
It’s safe to say I was absolutely heartbroken not being able to pursue my dream anymore. However, I didn’t waste any time looking for a new and better career path. After toying around with almost every possible major Shippensburg University had to offer, I decided the right path for me was Comm/Journ emphasizing in Public Relations. Truth be told – I’m thankful for those difficult biology professors. Without them, I wouldn’t have discovered my passion for public relations. I’ve learned plenty from having to switch majors, but I know now that I’m in the right major for three extremely important reasons:
Â
1. You don’t want to procrastinate on your homework.
In college, homework should interest you…not put you to sleep halfway through the chapter. If you aren’t interested in the content you’re learning, you might want to rethink the direction you’re taking. After all, you’ll be working in that field for the rest of your life.
Â
2. Going to class doesn’t feel like a chore.
I love going to class. I get to interact with all of the amazing people also enrolled in my program. The people you have to work with should make you enjoy your time in those small classrooms. It might sound repetitive, but the content you’re learning should excite you, not bore you.
Â
3. You’re excited about the future!
Every day, I wake up thinking to myself that I’m another day closer to becoming a PR practitioner. I fantasize about my future career, co-workers and of course – the money! If you can’t picture yourself working in the field that’s being taught to you, you should probably rethink what you’re doing.
Â
So if you’re not satisfied with your major, don’t be afraid to look around and explore other options. No one wants to get to senior year and realize what they’re about to graduate with isn’t going to make them happy. Besides, about 50% of college students don’t graduate with the major they entered with. If you’re seriously thinking about changing majors, you’re not alone! Take it from me: you could be making the best decision of your life!
