Siena Staples You Need in Order to Survive This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Hooray! You survived the month of aunts and uncles asking you a million questions about your life. Now you’re back to the treacherous Siena winter weather. No worries! I’ve come up with the necessary staples you need in order to keep yourself alive and warm this winter.

Winter Coat

If you haven’t invested in a heavy-duty coat you better head yourself straight to the mall or outlets pronto. These coats are a must during the brutal winter months of Siena because of the high below freezing temperatures. This is one thing you should pay a pretty penny for. Just think, this coat could last you 4+ years so that $200 price ticket becomes $50 once you divide it per year. Plus, you’ll be incredibly thankful and happy walking warm and toasty to class.

One thing to look for is wool jackets because they keep in heat more. Double points for the jacket to have a wool interior as well as exterior. It’ll keep you doubly as warm. Leather jackets are wonderful and incredibly stylish, but they will not keep you warm. If you still want to get away with wearing a leather jacket, look for one with shearling with them, or you can just wear them underneath your warm wool coat.

Boots

The second item you should invest in is a pair of winter boots. L.L. Bean, Hunter, and Sorel are great boots that will keep your little piggies dry and warm. Pair them with a thick wool sock and your toes will be incredibly thankful. Smartwool is a great choice for winter socks but any fuzzy socks should do the trick.

Chunky sweaters

Now you may have invested in the warmest coat ever, but that still might not protect you from the incredibly cold. Since I’ve been going to school at Siena, there have been 33 days where it has been below 0°. So you might want a few thick chunky sweaters in your closet to pair underneath your clothes. You can wear a tank top and a flannel underneath it as well. This hopefully will protect you from those days.

Hats

Protect your precious ears with either an adorable chunky knit hat or a fashionable hat. According to WebMD, we lose 80% of our body heat from out heads. You bet you’ll see me bobbing around in a nice, thick hat this winter. If you haven’t looked into the Love Your Melon project yet and want a hat, now is the time to do so.

Scarves

On a windy day, the best accessory a girl can have is a chunky knit scarf. These things are made out of love and happiness. Cover your face, shoulders, and neck all in one with this magical piece of cloth. Not only do they help you stay warm, but they also create another element to your outfit that is sure to bring it to the next level. Warmth and style? Sign me up.

Layering

Finally, my favorite part about the cold winter weather. You get to wear more clothes than you thought possible. You want to wear your favorite shirt, a jean jacket, and a flannel? More power to you! There are some many different wild outfits you can create by throwing on more clothes. Not only will you be super warm, but you’ll look like you just stepped out of a fashion magazine. Afraid you’re going to look too bulky? Throw on a belt or mix and match different lengths of items. Trust me, you’ll look like a million bucks.
