Walking to my classes the day after Halloween I could already see several Christmas trees in the windows of dorms I passed. I absolutely love Christmas (this isn’t just me being a Grinch), but people putting up Christmas decorations on November 1st is too soon! Halloween is a fun holiday that should be enjoyed, not rushed through just to get to Christmas.
I know we’re all gone during the majority of December for winter break, so I feel like decorating your dorm and celebrating with friends mid November is normal. November 1st is still wayyy too early, but a week or so after Halloween gives people enough time to actually transition into the holiday season.
For everyone who doesn’t live on campus though, what about Thanksgiving?? If everything’s already decorated for Christmas, it takes away from Thanksgiving. I don’t know how I feel about eating stuffing with my meal and a slice of pumpkin pie under the twinkling lights of my Christmas tree. The two just don’t go together!
I would say that the best time to decorate at home is at least the weekend after Thanksgiving. That way there are a few days to finish off the turkey and mashed potato leftovers in your fridge. It’ll give you time to get Thanksgiving out of your system (seasonal and digestive).
I’ve never heard of people making Christmas cookies before Thanksgiving but that’s a definite no. How could you possibly make cookies when there are so many delicious desserts to be had at Thanksgiving? Pumpkin pie, apple pie, chocolate pie, cobblers and more; who would want to miss out on that??
Listening to Christmas music is entirely different than decorating though. It gets you mentally in the mood for Christmas without having to physically do anything for it. Personally, I start listening to Michael Bublé’s Christmas album within the first week of November.
Christmas is almost here, but don’t forget about Thanksgiving! Almost time to get your decorating on!!
