3 Things You Really Should Focus On For Your Gym New Year’s Resolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Simmons chapter.

When people think about fitness, they don’t always think of the health aspects of it, they just think about losing the weight. This is a dangerous mindset to get into, especially if your New Year’s resolution to lose that weight. Instead, think of these 3 gym goals to get you healthy for the new year.

1. Strength building.

Strength building carries you throughout your life. Your muscles make you able to walk, run and do basic things throughout the day. The more muscle you build now, the healthier you will be in your old age. I don’t know about you, but when I’m 90, I want to be able to move around like I’m 20.

2. Body positivity.

When you’re working out, there may be other people around. Focus on yourself and how you are working on your beautiful body! My secret trick is to find a spot to look at on the wall so that I don’t turn my head to look at others.

3. Fun!

Getting fit should be fun! Try a zumba or a yoga class with your friends and make exercising fun. Being with your friends gives you accountability, too. The more fun it is, the more you are going to want to hit the gym.

Losing weight shouldn’t be your priority. All of us are born different shapes and sizes, which means we can be healthy in all different shapes and sizes.

I am a fan of experiences. I love to expand my knowledge anyway possible, whether that is traveling, attending a new class, writing an article for Her Campus, or on the soccer field. I'm determined to experience every aspect that life has to offer.
