How To Get That ’70s Inspired Bedroom Look

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

Self-isolation has forced people to spend more time in their homes than ever before. This seemingly never ending amount of time can make any space feel stagnant, so why not renovate your room with a timeless these that still feels like a breath of fresh air? Follow these basic design ideas to get that grovy ’70s-inspired bedroom look.

1. Posters

Posters are a cornerstone in almost all 70s-inspired spaces. Whether you want to hang up posters of classic rock bands like Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, or want to put up that 1D poster you saved from when you were 12, hang up any and all posters that reflect your taste. Make your room a reflection, if not an extension, of yourself.

2. Colors

Reds, oranges and yellows were a popular trio in the ’70s. Pops of green were also common, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what colors you use. Generally, there was a main color in the roomĀ but with blues, aquas, pinks, violets and other colors that brought unexpected contrasts. You can also add some light and groovy vibes with a colorful lava lamp.

3. Patterns and Textures

Paisley, floral, linear and geometric patterns were popular in the ’70s and were closely paired with the theme of colors. In addition to patterns, textures were major: textured wall patterns, shag rugs and carpets all added to that ’70s aesthetic.

4. Furniture

Bauhaus, bohemian and art deco designed furniture were all the rage in the ’70s. This ambiguity in style grants you more freedom when it comes to how they want their area to look, as there is not just one way to accomplish a ’70s-inspired room. Mix and match the furniture designs, or if you want to stay with the furniture you have, paint it.

5. Houseplants

Lastly, we have houseplants. Just as people are obsessed with houseplants today, they were in the ’70s. All kinds of plants were popular in the ’70s, especially ones that had full and beautiful foliage. Use plants as pops of color or even paint their pots and make them stands out. It all depends on what you like.

That ’70s look has never really faded as styles evolve and change over the years. There’s no negative way to decorate- integrate styles you enjoy into your bedroom however you please. If you llike patterns but hate textures, don’t include textures. Like monochrome? You can have a monochrome room with patterns and textures. These are only suggestions, so go out and find some ’70s inspo that you connect with, then bring those groovy vibes into your bedroom.
