How To Read More In 2022

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

Cheers to a new year! What better way to ring in the new year than to start setting goals and creating new habits? Over the last year, reading has become increasingly popular on social media. “In 2020, unit sales were up 8.2% over 2019, which saw 693.7 million print units sold.”, according to a January 2022 Publishers Weekly article.

One social media movement in particular, “Booktok” has played a major role in increasing literacy and boosting the sales of books across the country.

“”BookTok” is a community of users on TikTok who post videos reviewing and recommending books, which has boomed in popularity over the past year.”, according to a January 2021 NBC News article. The BookTok community inspires users around the world to dive into new genres and engage with authors old and new. It is responsible for rekindling people’s love for reading and motivating them to pick up a new hobby.

Here are three tips to help you read more this year:

  1. Dive Into The World of BookTube

To help find what kind of genres you like to read, I suggest watching book recommendation videos! YouTube is a great place to discover the types of books you would like to read and authors you can vibe with. Book content creators provide fresh insights and mini synopses on what’s currently popular in the reading scene. To get you started, here are some channels you should definitely check out: Aissata Amadou, uncarley, and unclearlyclaire.

  1. Track Your Reading Goals

Tracking the books you read can help you meet your goals and discover new books along the way. Goodreads and The StoryGraph are great tracking tools and provide you with titles that match your interests. At the end of the year, you can see all the books you read and gives you information on your reading habits. Think of it as a way to gamify reading!

  1. Read For Free

Libby is an online library filled with ebooks and audiobooks! To get started, all you have to do is enter your library card to get access to the ebooks your public library offers. The app is available on IOS, Android, and Windows 10. Libby makes it easy and accessible to enjoy books on the go!
