A lot of people think that marketing is all about the graphics and making flyers on Adobe. However, the reason I chose to go into marketing is because of the strategy and campaigns. Although graphic design is a part of marketing, there’s so much more to it.
I knew I wanted to pursue marketing since my freshman year of high school because I joined a competitive business organization where I wrote marketing plans and did roleplays. This organization was known as very challenging because high school students are solving company problems or writing reports to improve a company. I gave it a try in my first year and competed throughout all four years of high school because it was very enjoyable, and I got to travel to compete. Doing these reports brought out my creativity and passion for marketing early on. That’s why I always suggest high school and even college students join organizations that sound appealing, even if they don’t know if they’re interested in the subject.
Fast forward to my freshman and sophomore years in college, I found out that there’s a large world of marketing out there and many paths that I can take. There’s product marketing, growth marketing, brand marketing, analytics and more. Additionally, there are different industries to explore like the tech industry, retail, food service and others. This year, I have found interest in product marketing and have landed a summer 2021 product marketing internship to explore it and try it out. My interest is working in the tech industry to launch new products and features through well-rounded campaigns. As I explore new organizations and work on projects, I learn more and more about the amazing field of marketing.
Even if you don’t know what major you’re truly passionate about, it’s okay. Just know that in every organization that you take a leadership position in as well as in every type of job that you do as a student, you gain transferable skills that can help in the workforce after you graduate. Exploration is part of the college experience, so try new things and see what you enjoy, and eventually go after your dreams.
