A letter to the freshman who isn’t quite sure of what to do right now

Dear new freshman,

You’ve made it to college, you’re moved in… and now what? How about you let me, someone who was in your shoes just one short year ago, tell you the answer.  Here’s what you should do now: stop what you’re doing and breathe.

A lot of changes have already happened in your life recently, and they’re not even close to stopping.  You just moved away from home. Away from your parents, siblings, pets, best friends. And now you’re expected to not only adjust to being away from them, but to make new friends, find your way around a new campus, get used to a new room, and perform well academically.

That’s a lot to take on, but the good news is that everyone around you KNOWS that that’s happening to you, and they understand your situation.  This is your life, and only you know how you need to live it. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that it is super easy to fall into the college swing of things.  Some might make it seem effortless, but for most people, it takes a lot of time. Give yourself as much time as you need.

As daunting as it may seem right now, college life will change you for the better.  You will adapt, learn, and grow in the best possible ways. Have fun, and don’t let the next year (or 4) go by too quickly.
