Five Fashion Trends Taking Over Hawk Hill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

1. Fur Coats

Fur coats, jackets, and vests have been signs of wealth and status for decades; however, this particular fad died in the 80’s as animal rights movements rose. Luckily for us, faux-fur has made a demanding comeback. There are cheaper alternatives that match the ferocity of models strutting down the runway. There’s fur splashed with vibrant colors and jackets cropped to meet high-waisted pants. Just be careful, you don’t want to look like Cruella de Vil; you want to look like Stef Perna, sophomore. She looks sleek and fashion-forward while maintaining a professional and classic vibe.

2. Camo

I’ve been waiting for camouflage patterns to come back in style since I was little and got my brother’s hand-me-down camo cargo pants! This is my moment. Camo is just cool. It dates back to post-WW1 trends in America, then found its footing again in the 80’s and 90’s. Neutral patterns are great, because they go with any color – hot pink, teal, black, white, more camo… They’re also super versatile. Camo can be styled with anything from outfits for O’Pake to outfits for Mad River. Maggie McHale, senior, wears camo casually with this jacket while Ana Lucia Parham Santana, sophomore, wears a trendy outfit completed with a camo mini skirt.

3. Jean Jackets

Jean jackets will never not be worn. It’s a wardrobe staple; however, the variations sure do waver throughout the years. It has been worn by celebs for street-style and also glamourous looks – Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, for example. Then the notorious 80’s came and jean jackets automatically grew shoulder pads and baggy sleeves. Joufits (jean outfits) even made a short-lived appearance (@justintimberlake @britneyspears). We’re now a month into 2017 and seeing lots of wool-lined collars, patched designs, and oversized silhouettes. Here are two examples from juniors Franki Rudnesky and Bridget Steinetz.

4. Fishnet Stockings

Fishnets rocked our world in the late 20th century. They were paired with side-ponies and funky colors, then they made it to the goth-scene. First, I saw a lot of my generation wearing them under Halloween costumes – vampires and pumpkins and bikers, oh my! Now I’m pleasantly surprised to see them survive October and make it into the new year. This time… under destroyed jeans. Whaaaaat. This trend is taking the fashion world by storm as we speak. (PS. If you Google “fish nets”, you’ll get loads of nets used to catch fish.) Check out the way Megan Stalter, sophomore, styled her fishnets.

5. Embroidery

This trend is very much on the rise. Last time I heard of embroidery, it was in regards to a traditional household practice. Now I see leather boots, jeans, parkas, purses, and dresses all embroidered. A more popular design is a scarlet rose with pops of green in the leaves. The best part about this is that you can wear jeans with a little embroidery and you’re automatically trendy. Now all they have to do is embroider sweatpants for the comfort factor… Here is Ana Lucia Parham Santana, sophomore, rocking her own style of a little black dress.
