This week appears to many girls on Hawk Hill as all encompassing, with the possibility of rush’s results to dictate how – and most importantly, with who – you’ll spend your next four years. For me however, it marks a time of my friends being gone for hours on end and clothes missing from my closet. That’s right, I am largely indifferent to the Greek phenomena taking over Campion and I always have been. I’m a girl on campus who has never rushed.
A large number of my friends on campus have rushed, an even larger number of them are in sororities or fraternities on campus and I know an individual personally in every Greek organization. So what has been my hold up?
The truth is, I don’t have a hold up besides my own intuition. I am not anti-Greek life, nor pro-Greek life; it simply isn’t for me. My refusal to rush, despite encouragements from previous roommates, their bigs and littles, and other Greek friends, has taught me one of the most valuable lessons in life – to think for one self.
College presents us with many opportunities in which we can create meaningful relationships and make impacts larger than we would be able to do individually. For some such as my roommates, who for the past two years have been girls from different Greek life organizations, that opportunity is found through sororities. That was not the case for me, but in both instances, my roommates and I demonstrated the important life skill of staying true to oneself.
As collegiettes on a small campus, it can sometimes be easy to get wrapped up in what is trendy, or what seems, what “everyone” is doing, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best option for you. Another’s wishes will not dictate your own happiness. So if you didn’t rush, or you are the only one of your friends who is rushing, no need to fret as long as you are being your honest self. Seek out the clubs and organizations that align with your ambitions, desires, values, and morals, Greek or not.
The above picture is of myself (in the middle) with two of my roommates and good friends, Giana Alongi, who is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Caroline Maghini, a member of Alpha Phi.
