Christmas can be one of the best times spent with your significant other, especially when it comes to giving each other gifts. But this act of love and giving can turn into a catastrophe, when he or she just cannot seem to hide the looks of disappointment. So, let’s all make an effort to avoid the awkwardness this holiday season, and take some time to reflect on what girls and guys really want.
I spoke with some SJU boys about their best and worst Christmas experiences, and I was able to compile a list of some great ideas for your man:
What the men want:
Accessories: sunglasses, wallets, watch, cologne
I truly believe accessories are the way to go when it comes to buying gifts for guys. You can almost always find a nice accessory within your price range, and you really can’t go wrong with a new cologne, pair of Oakleys, or Bulova watch.
My personal favorite:
Polo Cologne Holiday Set – This set can last for years, and chances are your BF is going to like at least one of these scents. It’s classy, affordable, and sure to be a pleaser.
47.00 at Lord and Taylor’s: http://www.lordandtaylor.com/w…
Some other options for the boys:
Tickets to a sports game/concerts
Alcohol/Cigars
Now let’s look at some things you should definitely not be handing over to your boyfriend on Christmas. These same gentlemen told me their worst experiences with gifts, and how to avoid these catastrophes. One man’s sad story:
“I had been dating my girlfriend for a little bit over a year, and I knew I was going to get her something really nice for Christmas. I got her a Tiffany’s ring, and she got me a Build-a-Bear. We didn’t last much longer.”
What the men don’t want:
Scrapbook/Framed picture of yourself – although this is a cute idea for a DIY side gift, try not to make yourself the center of attention.
A stuffed animal – Please see above.
“Clothes from Kohl’s”/underwear and socks – This one really made me laugh. I think that some girls have the excellent ability to understand their men’s style, and some do not. Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask his friends, sister, brother, or anyone close to him what kind of clothes he would want.
And lastly ladies, it is important to let your man know what you also want for Christmas. Every girl has at least one horror story. Whether it’s an outdated Juicy jacket, or an uncomfortable ankle bracelet, we’ve all experienced that moment or terror and awkwardness when we open up our gifts. Let your man know what brands you love, what brands you definitely do not love, and everything in between. Or maybe, you just want a nice dinner in the city.
Both men and women, remember to be thankful for the effort, and always try to be understanding. It’s not always about what you get, but what’s really behind the gift.
