Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande’s engagement was a surprise to us all. The majority of people were shocked and confused by their relationship, and the duo were critiqued every step of the way; and unsurprisingly, it has continued after their break up. When they first got together, they had each just ended long term relationships, so fans had a lot to say. People believed things were going too fast and it all seemed very abrupt and spontaneous, and that the pair wouldn’t last.
After a few weeks of what the tabloids called “casual dating,” the couple got engaged. At first this shocking news was perceived to be a rumor, but then the couple publicly spoke about it. After Ariana Grande started responding to tweets about the engagement, and Davidson talked about it on The Tonight Show, it became clear the couple was truly in love.
Soon after the couple was outed, Grande’s new album “Sweetener” was set to be released. The singer added a song written specifically about Davidson, and to be blunt she titled it “Pete Davidson.” In the song, Grande calls Davidson her “soulmate” and says that he “got [her] happy.” After hearing this song some fans started to get on board with the relationship, but others were still skeptical.
First fans accused Davidson of not being boyfriend material because of his Borderline Personality Disorder. Soon this was debunked because it is wrong to limit someone to their mental illness. But Davidson continued to be problematic in the eyes of Grande’s fans. Davidson was making jokes about her on SNL, one joke even about their sexual relationship. The way he disrespect her didn’t stop there; he also said he was “proud” that she was stared at by Bill Clinton at Aretha Franklin’s funeral, and said he “feels bad” for the Bishop who was touching her butt because it was probably an “accident.” For these reasons many fans are celebrating the split, wishing she did it sooner.
Grande has been through a lot within this past year, with the attack at her concert in Manchester, and most recently the passing of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller. Many people are worried about her health and wellbeing by adding another break-up on top of the stress she is enduring, especially with the death of Miller. This breakup seemed just as abrupt as the start of their relationship.
Many people have their theories about why the two broke up; a rumor spreading around twitter is that Davidson was taunting Miller with pictures of himself and Grande. The rumor cited TMZ and because there is no TMZ article proving this to be true, I believe that it is a false allegation.
One thing that is true about it all, is the ex-couple will have to find ways to cope with the permanent emblems of their relationships. Both have been seen with new tattoos covering old ones that were in honor of each other. Davidson’s Dangerous Woman ears, for example, have been transformed into a big heart. A looming question waiting to be answered is- what about the song?
