Guide to the Best GALentines Day Yet!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

You don’t know what GALentines Day is? Let me be the first to introduce you to a revolutionary holiday. One that is not a “hallmark holiday” and does not leave you with a stomach ache and an outrageous bill from Edible Arrangements the next day. (Yes.. you DID send yourself an Edible Arrangement and tell your parents your “boyfriend” got it for you). GALentines Day is a day where you celebrate your single status with your other single best friends. No need to waste money on expensive gifts to show your significant other that you love them even though they already know you do. No need to gain weight forcing down the heavy meal you ordered at the restaurant your S.O. made a reservation at. Instead, you can do a plethora of activities on and off campus that are guaranteed to be fun and make you forget that you haven’t found “the one” yet. (Trust me, most people who think they have.. haven’t).

Morning Activities:

Brunch at Murray-Aikins Dining Hall!

Enjoy brunch at Saratoga’s hottest dining spot. Sip some mimosas (orange juice and sparkling water) and gossip with your friends about the latest Jenner/ Kardashian drama. Nothing is more refreshing than a crisp beverage and finding out that Kourtney and Scott are back together.

Get Fit with your Gals!

It’s a basic fact that you feel better about yourself after you workout. After finishing a long run and some sit ups alongside your friends, pausing to compare workout playlists, you can leave the Williamson Sports Center feeling accomplished and ready to take down anybody who dare ask why they’re single.. like really? today? of all days?

Afternoon Activities:

Common Room Picnic!

Get your entire floor together and bring in bagels from Uncommon Grounds and lay out some blankets. Talk about how much you love each other and reminisce about the past few months. It’s amazing how close you can become with someone in a semester.

DIY Valentines!

You know those funny little valentines that can be seen all over the internet around this time of year? Come up with your very own! Some examples include: “Will you be my open treadmill during gym rush hour?” “Will you be my empty red-side booth at 12:30 pm on a Friday?”

Night Activities:

Totally NOT Romantic Movie Night!

Skip the predicable love stories. Don’t watch “You’ve Got Mail” or “The Notebook.” Be a little more original and watch something that won’t have you grabbing at the Ferrero Rocher. Try something like “Star Wars” or “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.”

Wind-down Yoga

Okay, so you’ve had fun with your friends all day, but you still can’t shake those jealous feelings that you get when you walk past couples looking at each other with awe. Browse through yoga and meditation videos on Youtube and pick a few that look legitimate. Focusing on yourself and your goals will remind you that being single is NOT a bad thing! You have freedom to bat your eyes at anybody you please and dance with whoever you so desire at SPA on weekends. So what if you don’t have a S.O.? Just means you don’t have to share your twin XL bed.
