This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Name: Sana Bando

Year: 2017

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Major: Sociology

Her Campus: What made you interested in environmental issues?

Sana Bando: I’m really interested in food and agriculture issues. As a sociology major, I study a lot of social issues, which are often tied to environmental issues. It seems necessary to be concerned and then to act on those concerns in whatever way we can.

HC: How did you become involved with the composting here on campus?

SB: My junior and senior year of high school, I worked temporarily on a farm in New Orleans. My main task was composting. Even though it was really dirty work, it was satisfying. When I went back to Brooklyn, I was composting. In my mind, it seemed like a good solution and it had a lot to do with food and waste. I came to Skidmore interested in it and was an attractive solution to many current issues. Skidmore does a good job at making it popular.

HC: How can people who want to help out get involved?

SB: Come to the sustainability office or go to Harder 110 or email compost@skidmore.edu. Another way is just to volunteer on Fridays at 3pm D-hall atrium every week, rain or shine.

HC: What are you looking forward to this year with Skidmore and the environment/sustainability?

SB: This is the 4th year of compost, and since the beginning, we’ve made a lot of changes. This is our 3rd semester of composting food waste from Northwoods and Sussman. We’re looking forward to see how the program grows. In terms of volunteers this year, we have more volunteers from the environmental classes here on campus.

HC: What’s your favorite part about composting?

SB: My favorite part about composting is the physical part itself. There’s a lot of physical strength that’s required. There’s a lot of shoveling and using pick axes when the compost freezes. The act of composting is a positive distraction. I also really like the fact that it brings people together even though it’s kind of a gross disgusting thing.Â
