Halloween is my favorite holiday, and the spooky season brings me so much joy. I’m obsessed with everything skulls and spiders, and movies like “Hocus Pocus” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” have my heart. Every year, my family decorates the house and front yard to turn our neighborhood into a spooky spectacle. Everyone has a costume, too. There hasn’t been a single Halloween we haven’t dressed up for. But, while I love dressing up for Halloween, it’s often difficult to find a costume that I feel confident in. Many Halloween costumes are marketed towards people on the skinnier side, a description I don’t fit. Despite the lack of size inclusion for mass-market costumes, it’s possible for everyone to feel fab in their Halloween get-up. Halloween is for everyone, and here are my favorites to get you in the spirit (see what I did there?).

Fairy Godmother from “Shrek 2”

This one is my costume for this year. If you’re a bit more into meme culture or the nostalgia for the “Shrek” movies, this is a perfect fit. While I ended up going for a look with her blue dress, the outfit from the “I Need a Hero” scene is iconic and makes for an eye-catching costume. It’s pretty simple, as well, and works for us hotties with glasses. All you need is a glittery red dress, fairy wings, a purple wig and a star wand. POM Bottle

This one is a favorite because it’s just so creative! POM pomegranate juice is known for its unique hourglass bottles, so it’s a fun and unusual costume perfect for girls with curves. Cat, the creator of this costume, made it all by hand, including the bottle-cap hat. The back of the dress even includes the nutrition info. It’s a relatively simple DIY project that requires puff paint, cardboard and fabric lettering.

Penelope Featherington from “Bridgerton”

I am totally in love with “Bridgerton,” and Penelope has quickly become one of my very favorite characters. Her wit and determination are so entrancing, and her gowns are my favorite color, so maybe I’m a bit biased. While this costume is more complicated to DIY, cosplayer Kirilee documented her entire process for making her version. If you’re hesitant to get into cosplay, Regency-style gowns are gaining popularity and can be purchased on Amazon or Etsy. Don’t forget her stylish curled hair and dainty gloves. For an extra layer of Bridgerton lore, use a quill pen as a prop.

Ursula from “The Little Mermaid”

In your villain era, you say? Well, I have a costume for you. The iconic villain from Disney’s 1989 “The Little Mermaid” is a terrific way to channel that energy for Halloween. While Ursula has become a popular character for costuming, lots of mass-produced costumes exist on the market for an easy solution. On a craftier note, you might need a black dress, purple body paint and a white wig. Ursula’s unique drag-style makeup may require some practice, but it’s worth it to slay all those poor, unfortunate souls at the Halloween party.

Rose Quartz from “Steven Universe”

“Steven Universe” has a ton of potential for Halloween costumes, but Rose Quartz offers the perfect opportunity to get really dressed up. Grab a flowy white gown and add a star and gem on the abdomen. Rose’s intricate, fluffy pink hair will probably take some extra work, but it’s all about completing the look.

Even if these costumes aren’t particularly your vibe, you can always go down a Pinterest rabbit hole to discover the right costume for you. Cosplay and costumes are for everyone, regardless of body type.
