10 Ways To Stay Cheery When Weather Is Dreary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

1. Drink hot beverages

Hot drinks are key to getting through cold, dark winter days.  Hot cocoa, coffee, tea, and everything in between have the power to brighten up any day and any mood.  Cinnamon apple spice herbal tea is always lovely and warming!

2.  Go to the gym

Staying active can really help to raise spirits while also keeping you fit and healthy! Just a half hour on the treadmill, elliptical, or bike would be sufficient exercise to make you feel fantastic.  Or if this task seems too daunting, take some time and participate in yoga or meditation, both of which would help you relax and reduce stress.

3.  Participate in fun winter festivities

Skiing, snowboarding, building a snowman, ice skating, the list goes on.  There are many fun things to do outside, just throw on an extra jacket, hat, and mittens and head on out!

4. Plan a movie night

Staying in one night and immersing yourself in a good movie with some good friends and good snacks is always a lovely way to spend those cold winter nights! Comedy, drama, romance, thriller, horror movies, or The Bachelor are always fun to watch in a group.

5. Call your mother

If you’re ever feeling down, call your mother even if it’s just to check in.  It’s so important to tell your mom that you love her and she usually can help lift those spirits if they get low!

6. Take a hot shower

If the cold is ever keeping you down, get some music and take a long, hot shower.  It may seem silly but it can really help to relax your body, reduce stress, and stay warm.

7. Treat yo self

Go online shopping, buy yourself some macaroons, get pizza and wings delivered, anything.  Treating yourself is key to surviving a cold, dark winter.

8. Surround yourself with cheery people

Being around happy people can go a long way!  You are, in many ways, a product of your environment and being around good people can help anyone feel stellar.

9. DIY spa night

Spend a night with the girls to focus on your physical health!  Get some face masks, cucumbers, nail polish, anything.  Put on lotion regularly to protect against the dry, cold weather!

10. Switch it up!

Over the winter a lot of people decide to change things, whether it be getting a haircut, dying your hair, getting a tattoo, piercing, or just painting your nails!  This can be a fun thing to do to add a little spunk to everyday life.
