If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent your fair share of Valentine’s Days as a single person. (I will lovingly refer to Valentine’s Day as Single Awareness Day from here on out.) Your friends who have their Mr./Mrs. Right (or Mr./Mrs Right Now) look forward to flowers, dinner and maybe even jewelry. As single people, we’ll be saying things like “I’m free to do what I want” and “I don’t need a man/woman.” This year, find something a way to celebrate your single life. Remember, actions speak louder than words!
My Secret Valentine
To start, think of this as a Secret Santa or White Elephant for Valentine’s Day. Get your girl friends (and guy friends, if they are interested) and put everyone’s name in a hat. Set a budget. $10 is usually appropriate for collegiettes, but feel free to do more or less.
Make sure all the gifts are Valentine’s themes. I did this one with my friends a few years ago and the gifts ranged from chocolate to condoms. It depends on who your friends are. You can make a whole evening out of the exchange. If there is a small enough group, why not make a reservation for dinner? Why not be single together?
A Personal Spa Day
Okay, we’re not rich. We’re college students, but that doesn’t mean we can’t treat ourselves every once in a while. Use Single Awareness Day as an excuse to grab a mani-pedi, massage or facial.
I recommend the O’Brien Aveda Institute in South Burlington for your spa needs. It’s a student salon and spa, meaning that prices are extremely discounted. In fact, you can have a Day of Beauty, which includes Spa Manicure, Spa Pedicure, Facial, Customized Scalp Treatment, Shampoo & Style, for just $60. Don’t forget to get your make-up done for $10, so you can look fabulous when you see your friends later.
Revisit a Hobby or Volunteer
Make Single Awareness Day about bettering yourself. Remember the scarf you started knitting last winter? Pick up the needles again. Remember the long board you swore you going to learn to ride? Now is the time! You have an entire day to revisit something that other activities may have had priority over.
Volunteer work is another great option for Single Awareness Day. Sign-up for an activity through the MOVE office or venture off campus to volunteer and Burlington City Arts or United Way. (You can use Google to find a large array of volunteer opportunities.) Who knows? Maybe you’ll meet someone during your volunteering to grab coffee with afterwards.
