It’s Only Week Three?: How To Start the Semester Off Right

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

As second semester has just begun, it can be difficult to get back into the swing of things. Even after the first week it seems like you’re already swamped with work…where was syllabus week? You may feel this way, but it’s still important to start off the semester in a positive way. Here are five ways you can start the semester off on the right foot!

1. Plan accordingly

No matter how long your syllabus is for your class (I have a 19 page syllabus for one class…yes, 19), it’s important to at least look at the class’ calendar to get a sense of where larger projects and papers occur during the semester. This way, even though the syllabus may change, you’re not super surprised when your teacher throws a 10-page paper at you. At least looking a week ahead on your syllabus and writing assignments in your planner will allow you to budget your time wisely.

2. Try not to procrastinate

This is something I’m definitely guilty of, no matter how much I tell myself I won’t. Going along with the previous idea, if you manage your time well, then procrastinating shouldn’t be as much of an issue. Of course, sometimes you might slip up here and there, but it’s the effort that counts! And if you start the semester by staying on top of your work, then you won’t find yourself falling behind as much later on in the semester.

3. Take breaks!

This picture accurately depicts how I’m feeling at the moment, and it’s only week two! Even though it’s easy to get caught up in the endless cycle of working, sometimes all you need is a quick 5-10 minute break to re-focus. Especially when you have a lot of reading, you can find yourself becoming distracted. What I like to do is set a timer for 20-25 minutes and then take a 5 minute break. This allows me to get an extra boost of energy and re-focus. This may not work for everyone, but just find something that works for you. Even a quick power nap may help.

4. Take care of yourself

With all of the work you have to do, it might be difficult to find time for yourself. Plenty of sleep, water, and food are all important for your best performance and to keep yourself healthy!

5. Balance is key

It’s important to still find time for friends, family, and the things that you love! Friends and family help to keep you grounded and no matter how important school work is, having a balance is crucial for your overall well-being.
