10 Classy (Not Trashy) Halloween Costume Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

The deadline is rapidly approaching, two weeks left to be exact, and you have to make a huge decision. A decision that is going to haunt your Instagram and Facebook feeds for eternity. You’ve been racking your tired and caffeine-laden brain for over a month but to no avail.

What are you going to be for Halloween?

This is the holiday where the trashy and the creative come out to play. You can either pull a, “I’m a mouse, duh” costume together or a totally unique, fun and classy one. It all depends on how you want to be remembered. If you’ve had enough brainstorming and just want an awesome idea already, read below for 10 classy (not trashy) Halloween costumes ideas.

1. Beanie Baby

This is borderline “Mean Girls” slutty animal with just enough of a twist to make it super cute!  Start with the easy part, purchase animal footie pajamas or cat ears to accessorize your all black outfit.  Next comes the crafting. A DIY red heart “TY” necklace will be the icing on the cake to this costume. Expect nostalgia from your friends as they remember their long lost and deeply loved collection of stuffed animals.

2. Holly Golightly from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

This Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired costume is super easy because you probably have all of these items already in your wardrobe. Get out that little black dress, add some pearls, some shades, and you’re good to go with this chic ensemble.

3. Tina Belcher from “Bob’s Burgers”

Is humor more your thing? Tina Belcher is another easy, unique costume. All you need is a blue shirt, blue skirt, converse, oversized glasses and a yellow clip to hold back your pesky bangs.  Make sure you go around awkwardly discussing how cute Jimmy Pesto’s butt is.

4. Emoji

You have plenty emojis to chose from. How about opening up the emoji keyboard, shutting your eyes, and the first one your finger lands on is your costume? I just hope you didn’t land on the red circle or the outdated floppy disk. I think going to a Halloween party dressed as the salsa dancer emoji would win you the costume contest for classiest and sassiest.

5. Dory from “Finding Dory”

Disney has failed us by not releasing any Disney Princess movies in 2016. Good thing we still have Pixar to rely on! To dress up as Dory, grab a blue skater dress or – if you’re feeling extra creative – make your own blue and yellow tutu out of tulle.

6. “Ghostbusters”

Another movie related costume idea comes from the fun, feminist remake of the famous 80s original. Bust out those combat boots and grab your Proton Pack.  The ghost balloon is a super fun extra touch!

7. Beyoncé (Lemonade)

Don’t worry Be-yoncé in her empowering Lemonade visual album. A yellow dress, maybe a baseball bat, and keep your Queen B confidence up throughout the night.

8. Frat Boys

Everyone loves some good, clean satire. Wear a polo and some obnoxiously colored shorts and you’re good to go. Add a backwards ball cap, sunglasses hanging off some croakies, and a red solo cup to accessorize.  Bonus points if you can find accessories with Greek letters.

9. Pokémon

Gotta catch ‘em all!  You can either be one of the cute little monsters everyone is obsessed with or a masterful PokĂ©mon trainer. The real question is will you ever be as cute as this couple here? Pikachu, I wish you luck in finding your Ash.

10. The Chanels from “Scream Queens”

You need your whole clique to truly make this costume count. Either go with last season’s KKT inspired outfits or this season’s cute nurse outfits; whichever you choose you can’t go wrong with the Chanels.
