10 Ways to Use Dallas to Get Healthy This Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Dallas is a great city to live in and to get healthy in! Take advantage of these easy ways to get in shape this spring!

1. Take advantage of outside trails

Dallas has many designated walking/biking trails. Favorites include the Katy Trail and White Rock Lake Trail, plus on the Katy Trail there are tons of restaurants to stop at and grab a coffee/lunch during on your walk!

2. Get Juicing

Juice has definitely changed! Many juice places are using fresh vegetables and fruits to make healthy blends. The juice blends have many benefits such as improved immunity and energy. My favorite juice place is The Juice Bar. Luckily, The Juice Bar has been popping up everywhere in the city. Visit thejuicebardallas.com to find a location near you.

3. Attend a community work out class in the park

The Dallas Yoga Center hosts free yoga classes each Saturday at Klyde Warren Park. The classes are at 10 a.m. and are open to all levels. This definitely will start your Saturday morning on a positive note. Visit klydewarrenpark.org for more information.

4. Switch out brownies for “fro-yo”

Let’s be honest, sometimes a brownie is just needed. But on those days when you’re looking for a lighter sweet treat frozen yogurt, “fro-yo,” is a good option. Dallas has many frozen yogurt shops including Pinkberry, Yumilicious (in Snider Plaza), and my personal favorite I Heart Yogurt. To find an I Heart Yogurt near you, go to ihearty.com.

5. Take a “spin” at a spinning class

Spinning is a fast-paced, calorie-burning work out that leaves you feeling rejuvenated. Dallas has many spin places, but my favorite is in Snider Plaza, Lync Cycling. They offer a variety of classes. Visit lynccycling.com to sign up for a class. Also: Soulcycle (very popular spin studio from Los Angeles) opens soon in Preston Center, so be sure to check that out!

6. Sign up for a 5k/half-marathon

There is a local run about every few days in Dallas. Upcoming notable runs include the Dallas Foam Glow 5K on April 23rd and Head for a Cure 5k/half-marathon on May 7. Visit runguides.com to sign up.

7. Go rock climbing!

Dallas is a fairly flat city without much outdoor climbing. The good news is there are many indoor rock-climbing studios in Dallas. One of the larger ones is Summit Gym. So grab some friends and make a day of it! Go to summitgyms.com to register!

8. Eat a healthier dinner

One thing’s for sure: There is no shortage of great food in Dallas. It can be a struggle to eat well because of this! (I mean who can resist BBQ and Tex-Mex food!) There are some healthy food options in Dallas that are still delicious! My favorite is True Foods Kitchen because they offer healthy food that tastes like you’re indulging (“healthy” pizza for the win!)

9. Dance the night away

This one may sound silly, but dancing is truly a great work out. It is also so fun to do with a group of friends! Since we’re in Texas, what’s better than some country western dancing? Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth is a little bit of a drive but is worth the trip! With concerts and tons of western dancing it is sure to be a fun night (while burning calories!) Go to billybobstexas.com for more information.

10. Buy better groceries

One of the first ways to make positive changes is making your diet healthier. Instead of eating out, try cooking at home using fresh ingredients. The Dallas Farmers Market is open daily and sells locally produced fruits and vegetables. Go to dallasfarmersmarket.org to plan your visit.
