If you moved across the country or across the street, college is an adjustment. For some of you, the adjustment happened the minute you dropped your bags on the floor of the dorm, while others still may be feeling a little lost and wishing they felt the connection they think everyone else is feeling. But I’m here to ask you to give yourself some time: time to adjust and time to fall in love with your school, because neither of those things will happen overnight.Â
The first semester of college is hard in a lot of different ways. You might be struggling with classes, trying hard to fit into the social scene, or missing home, and all of those things are normal. Don’t beat yourself up over things that you can’t change, don’t feel like you’re doing something wrong by not having the time of your life, and do not force yourself to love college. Everyone’s experience in college is different, and comparing your time at SMU with your friend’s time at a different school is useless. You will find your place at SMU. It might take a week, a month, or a semester, but everything will fall into place, and you’ll be able to walk around campus and say “I love this place” and truly mean it.Â
Just give it time.Â
