Caitlin Keen, a junior at SMU, speaks about her experiences on the track team, her love for the sport, and what she hopes to accomplish in the future.
What got you into track?
I started running track in the 6th grade but at the time I never thought about running longer than a single lap. I was fast for my age and loved being able to compete for myself against individuals. It wasn’t until 2 years later when I began running laps around my neighborhood that I fell in love with distance running.Â
What was the biggest competition you’ve ever competed in?
This past year’s Conference Championships for Cross Country was the biggest competition I’ve ever competed in in terms of pressure and expectations. Our team had a target on our back from the beginning of the year and we knew that winning was going to take everything we had. We were successful but I can’t tell you how much effort it took to run that race as fast as my teammates and I did in order to beat the other Conference USA teams.Â
What was the most rewarding experience that you’ve had in track and field?
With this season being the fastest I’ve ever been, my most rewarding experiences have all happened pretty recently. I think the most rewarding experience is the one I am able to have now; with my teammates and coach. I feel more blessed everyday that I am part of such a strong team with incredible leadership. I give a 110% effort every day because I know I am not only competing for myself but for them also.Â
Is it true that there’s a thing called “runner’s high”?
YES! I’m addicted to endorphins. Having a runners high isn’t just something you get while running but something you get from running. Getting up and going for a run in the morning can improve your mood for the rest of the day. It leaves you feeling refreshed, energized and more empowered to accomplish things throughout the day. The more you do it, the more you will begin to see a gradual change in you lifestyle and mood.Â
What is the best part about being on the SMU team?
The sisterhood. We all connect well and are very close because we share a similar mentality. We are all competitive, tough, and hardworking but we each bring our own unique personality to practice everyday. I love my team and know that I will always need them more then they know.Â
Coming into your senior year, what is one thing that you’d like to accomplish that you haven’t yet?Â
Going to Nationals for Cross Country and Track. This is a dream and a goal that we strive for as a team. We missed our shot in Cross Country this past year but I can guarantee it’s been on our minds every day since the end of the season. For track I am looking to qualify for Outdoor Nationals this June in Oregon for the 5000 meter and 10000 meter races. Being able to accomplish going to Nationals will be a dream come true. I believe in myself and am confident that I if i keep working hard I have the ability to get there.Â
