Ah, the Met Gala. The star-studded event is back again for another year. This year’s theme, “Camp,” was something I had never heard of before. Honestly, I was super confused. When I first saw these outfits, “Camp” style reminded me of a cross between the bold, audacious and crazy fashion that the Capitol citizens wear in The Hunger Games and what pretty much everyone in Alice in Wonderland wears too.
Susan Sontag, author of Notes on Camp, (as quoted in Quartzy), describes that “the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t make it that much clearer. Either way, here are my favorite looks from this year’s Met Gala, in all of its craziness, extravagance and “camp” style.
- Zendaya
-
I mean, Zendaya can do no wrong. Her Cinderella-inspired gown was beautiful, and with a little bit of fairy magic, it lit up into a light blue masterpiece.
- Elle Fanning
-
Elle Fanning has always been one of my favorites. Her super cute pinky-orange look gives me major retro ’60s and ’70s vibes, not to mention her fun necklace and dangly nails.
- Hailey Bieber
-
If we’re going for sophisticated, I say Hailey Bieber wins. Her look is elegant, while the craziness she brings is in the form of using a jeweled thong as an accessory. Yeah, she did that.
- Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
-
One of my favorite couples ever made their Met Gala debut on the pink carpet, complete with matching outfits. I love the colors, design, and pattern. I’m a sucker for this, indeed.
- Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
-
As someone who knows Miley Cyrus as being more extravagant at times, I really like the subtle extravagance she went for in her outfit. I think the shape of the dress is the coolest part, and the shoes pull it all together along with Liam Hemsworth’s slick black suit.
- Kacey Musgraves
-
Come on Barbie! I love Musgraves’ Barbie-inspired look by Moschino. Pink, pink and more pink!
- Shawn Mendes
-
Shawn Mendes always keeps it slick and classy. Peep the golden blonde streaks in his hair for that extra flare.
- Janelle Monae
-
Honestly, I’m not one for tons of extravagance, but Monae’s look really feels like a piece of art. My favorite aspect is the “hats-on-hats” hat she wears coupled with the color-blocked skirt.
- Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
-
Back to what I said about Hailey Bieber, Whiteley takes elegance and mixes it with a little bit of crazy in her Oscar de la Renta dress.
- Lady Gaga
-
If anyone is known for going big, it’s Lady Gaga. And trust me, with this outfit, she definitely brought it.
Now, all I’m thinking about is what’s next for Met Gala 2020!
