I laid with the lilies today
And wept with bitter dismay
For their petals, so pure and sweet,
Had crumpled under blind feet
The river, I heard as it swayed,
Had been by human hands betrayed
The sky above my repentant head
Was tainted with grey and oblique dread
Yet, the lilies kissed my face and forgave
The body that laid alone in their grave
