Being in the South, it is hard to believe that we’re actually writing about snow. True, any precipitation other than rain counts as “snow” down here, and the accumulation of said moisture is not taken into account when the university closes, but hey, we’re not complaining. Now, the only question is… what exactly do we do on a snow day in South Carolina? Lucky for you, we’ve done some great research in order to help you make the very best of your free day.Â
1. Have a sleepover
It might sound corny, but have a sleepover the night before a snow day! Just because you’re in college doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t continue to have sleepovers with your friends.  It’s a perfect way to catch up on girl time and forget about everything else causing stress in your life. Break out the popcorn, hot chocolate, and chick flicks, and let your inner middle schooler shine for the night.Â
2. Sleep in
This seems like a given, but we’re 100% serious. Enjoy snoozing through your pre-set class alarms, and instead take your time waking up and getting ready for the day. We can all agree that college students have crazy busy schedules. Between balancing classes, extra-curricular activities, and social lives, we tend to forget to take care of ourselves, and our bodies get worn out. Take this opportunity to catch up on your beauty rest, and you’ll be ready to jump back into your routine the next day!
3. Wear cute PJs all day
We’re not talking sweatpants and your favorite Gamecock tee. We’re talking matching top and bottoms, onesies, fuzzy robes, bunny slippers, the whole shebang. Cute pajamas are fun and cozy, and they will automatically put you in the snow day spirit. Imagine all of the adorable Snapchats and Instagram posts to come.
4. Play a board game
If you think board games are boring, chances are you’re boring. Round up a crew and play Life, Monopoly, Mad Gab, Taboo, whatever! Board games always bring laughs, and friendly competition is a great stress reliever. Not to mention it’s a great excuse to hang out with that cute boy you’ve been talking to (after all, the more players, the more fun!)
5. Watch old cartoons
In case you haven’t noticed, classic shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, and Johnny Bravo are all now on Netflix, and this is possibly one of the best thing to happen to 90’s kids since the shows were actually on air. Some of you might think this is lame, but we know you’re secretly looking to see if your old favorites are on there…
6. Grub
An obvious one. Snow days are a great excuse to indulge in chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, pizza for lunch, and homemade brownie-cookie ice cream sundaes for dinner. After all, calories don’t count on snow days…right?
7. Go through your Pinterest vault
Whether it’s a yummy recipe, a cute craft, or a cool manicure, make something you’ve pinned on Pinterest! We’re all guilty of pinning 100 things during a boring lecture, and never getting around to making any of them. Well, now you have that free time you’ve always wanted!Â
8. Organize your closet
How many times have you been in a rush to get ready for the night, and end up throwing 6 different shirts back into your closet, never to be seen again? Now that you have a full 24 hours to yourself, it’s time to face the black hole that is your wardrobe. Hang up all of the dresses laying on your desk chair. Fold the laundry that you washed last week, but never got around to putting away. You’ll thank us when you go to pull out your favorite shirt, and you can actually find it!Â
9. Learn/choreograph a dance with your friends
After reading this one, you’re probably asking yourself, “WTF, who still does this?” Think back to those lost-lost days of elementary school– didn’t you used to have a blast doing this? Think of all the Backstreet Boys and Hilary Duff dances that are undoubtedly hidden somewhere in your parents’ home video collections. It’s a fun way to actually exercise (because let’s be real, who makes it to the gym on snow days?) and a good way to practice if you’re auditioning for a Greek Week event!
10. Update your iTunes library
What was the last song you uploaded to your iTunes? Justin Bieber? Practically deported. Jonas Brothers? Broken up. Miley? Who knows. A day off is a perfect opportunity to download the songs you’ve been jamming to on the radio for the past couple of weeks, but haven’t had time to add to your collection. Already tired of this week’s top 100? Try turning on Genius in your iTunes library, and see what the site has suggested for you. Who knows, you might just find a new obsession.Â
11. Build a snowman
Do you wanna build a snowman?! It doesn’t have to be a snowman! (Yes, we are quoting Frozen). Go out and play in the snow! Who cares if there’s barely an inch on the ground? When you go to school in the South, snow isn’t a common sight. So, layer up and take advantage of it!
12. Catch up with your relatives
You probably talk to your parents often, because they’re constantly calling/texting/emailing/Facebook messaging you. But what about other relatives? Think about how much your grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. would love to hear from you! You’d be surprised to know how happy your ten-minute conversation about classes and spring break plans will make them. And, who knows, it might persuade them to send a care package your way!
13. Play video games
Again, throw it back to old days. How long has it been since you’ve played a good game of Mario Kart or FIFA? If you don’t have the game you want to play, we’re sure the boys next door have it, and would love to play it with you.Â
14. Throw/attend a snow “darty”Â
If you’re not into the whole “relaxing snow day” idea, feel free to use this unexpected day off of class as yet another excuse to party. Parties on snow days start at 9 AM, and last until the next morning (hence the name “darty”- “day party”). If you’re throwing or attending a snow day party, be fun and make it winter themed! You could combine it with idea #3 and have a cozy pajama party, or go bigger and have a winter beer Olympics! If all else fails, be assured that at least one of your guests will find a way to turn the events of Sochi 2014 into a drinking game.
15. Catch up on homework
Don’t laugh, this is a solid plan. If you’re an early riser, get a few problems done before the rest of your world wakes up. If your friends want to go out, tell yourself that you can’t go unless you finish one more chapter of your book for English. You’ll be happy that you got some work done when you go to class the next day, and realize that professors will now be piling on homework, because missing one day of classes might just destroy their carefully planned syllabis.Â
