5 Tips for Making the Most Out of Your Summer Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Summer internships are a transformative experience, offering a glimpse into the real world of full-time work. Whether you’re interning at a prestigious corporation or a small startup, making the most out of your internship requires a proactive approach. I recently finished up my first summer internship and learned a few things along the way. Here are five tips to help you maximize your summer internship experience:

1. Ask Lots of Questions

People generally prefer working with interns who show genuine interest and have curious minds rather than someone who thinks they are a know-it-all. Asking questions not only helps you learn but also allows you to foster positive relationships with others.

2. Request 1-on-1 Meetings

If your internship allows for it, take the initiative to request one-on-one meetings with those in and outside of your department. These meetings can provide insights and networking opportunities. In these meetings, ask about their career paths, their roles within the company, and any advice they may have for someone starting in the industry.

Tip – Write down their advice and basic information about them like where they are from and hobbies. This will make it easier for you to create conversation later on.

3. Focus on Building Resume-Worthy Skills

Not all internships are created equal. Some may involve meaningful projects, while others may primarily consist of “busy work.” Regardless of your assigned tasks, make an effort to identify opportunities to develop resume-worthy skills. If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of mundane tasks, ask if you can learn about the platforms and tools the company uses or shadow people involved in more significant projects.

4. Keep a Detailed Record

During your internship, keep a running document that lists all the tasks and projects you work on. Additionally, jot down what you’ve learned from each of these experiences. This will make updating your resume and preparing for future interviews easier.

5. Reflect on Your Preferences and Goals

Take mental notes of what you enjoy and what you don’t like about your position. This will help you gain a clearer understanding of your career preferences and goals.

In conclusion, a summer internship can be a valuable stepping stone toward your career goals. By being curious, seeking out learning opportunities, and maintaining a record of your experiences, you can make the most out of your internship. Remember that every experience can be an opportunity for growth if approached with the right mindset. It is easy to have self-doubt as an intern, but you wouldn’t be there if you weren’t ready for the challenge. Believe in yourself!
