7 Reasons You Need to Start Running (Even if You Hate It)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Not too long ago, I was exactly where you might be. Not yet committed to my daily workouts, but not completely un-committed either. However, I was trying to convince myself to workout everyday. A minute of running seemed impossible and the thought of doing a 5K (3.1 miles), or even just one mile, was ludicrous. Why would I want to put my body through that hell? However, I started Couch to 5K in April 2015, and this past November I ran a half marathon. If I could do it, there’s no reason you can’t do it too! If that’s not enough to convince you, here is some more motivation.

1. It will get easier.

I promise that if you put your mind to it, you can run as fast and as far as your heart desires. It doesn’t take long for the 30 seconds of running you were able to do at the beginning to become 3 miles!

2. You will gain incredible self-confidence.

When you accomplish something you thought you never could, you feel empowered and unstoppable. “If I can do this, what can I do next?” will be your mindset. Not to mention, the muscles you gain as a runner make you physically stronger!

3. You will feel better.

Even after a couple of running sessions, you will feel your body changing and becoming stronger. You will feel less stressed, and overall happier.

4. It will encourage you to be healthier in other aspects of your life.

You don’t want to ruin your hard work with a sweet treat, so you will find yourself buying grapes and protein powder instead of cookie dough and potato chips. In addition, you will be motivated to get a full night’s sleep and be properly hydrated in order to enhance your running.

5. The race-cations!

There are races all across the world, from the vineyards of California to the deserts of Dubai! How fun is that?!

6. You will be an inspiration to your family and friends.

People will see your awesome results and they will want to be a part of your success. Your family and friends will be motivated thanks to your excellent example.

7. You will make new friends.

The running community is incredibly supportive of one another. Stories of elite runners giving guidance to beginners are not uncommon. There are countless running clubs and online forums, and you will meet some unbelievable people at races and running events.

So put your headphones in, jam out to some Beyoncé, and start running today!
