In the light of The Daily Gamecock going dark, I wanted to share my own personal story with my mental health experience.Â
On December 2nd, 2019 I decided to try to take my own life. I had an awful weekend, I felt as if my family and friends were just tired of me and felt really lonely. Along with all of that came finding out I was going to be failing a course, one that was very necessary to an Exercise Science major.Â
Long story short, the on-duty Psychologist told me I needed to get my life together because I could do better, especially since I was only seventeen and a freshman at UofSC. I did exactly that. I changed my major, talked to my family and friends about how I felt, and here I am today with a long list of achievements just since then.Â
My story is to help encourage others, those who are struggling right now. Whether you’re in a bad place such as I or whether you’re going through some stuff regardless of having those not so great thoughts. I want you know to reach out to your friends.Â
Some tips I have on mental health and all things dealing with it are to talk to someone. There are so many people on campus that would love to help you, and if you’ve ever taken a U101 course I guarantee you your professor for it is one of them. Secondly, make a to do list of everything you need to do and include when it’s due. Online classes are tough to keep up with, even an organized person such as myself.Â
Lastly, understand that your life is worth it and taking it is not. Never take your own life due to stress or relationship issues, whatever it might be. Someone is always there to talk, especially the Her Campus South Carolina team.Â
I can only hope our next semester will be better than this stressful-packed one.
