You may have seen this week’s student spotlight at your latest function or on stage at a bar in Five Points. USC student and musician Keagan Anderson is a member of the band Mayberry, and he sat down to talk to me about the band and his interest in music.
Name: Keagan Anderson
Age: 20, but 21 in May
Major: Management and Marketing Double Major, with Sports and Entertainment Management Minor
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland
What instrument do you play?
Guitar
How did you meet the other members of your band?
A mutual friend introduced us and we decided to get together and jam one night in my apartment where we held most of our practices last year. We hit it off right away so we decided to add to the group and make a full lineup for the band.
How long have you been playing guitar?
I began playing guitar when I was 11 years old, and started lessons when I was 13 years old. I started studying Jazz when I was 15, but now I play all types of genres with the band.
Where do you guys usually play here?
We play all types of events around Columbia, mostly bars and Greek functions, but charity and school sponsored events as well.
Where’s your next gig?
We are playing an hour long set list for Relay For Life at Blatt Field at 12:30 a.m.! Then we’re off to Georgia to play our first wedding, which is very exciting as well.
Do you think you’ll continue to play music after college?
Music has been a huge part of my life ever since my first band in 9th grade. Not a year has gone by where I wasn’t in a band, so the fact that I have been able to be in a band all throughout college has been an incredible opportunity. I would love to keep playing with these talented musicians; I’m lucky to call them my friends. We’ve got our hearts set on Nashville.
