The Columbia Barre Studio That Changed How I Workout

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

As I’m sure many other college students have, I’ve found it so hard to get into a routine that truly works for me (more specifically โ€” a workout routine). When first coming to school, I’d utilize the school’s gyms and workout equipment, but as soon as I moved off campus, I never found myself driving there. I had lost touch with my body and was overwhelmingly tired most of the week. I was feeling rather hopeless until barre3 in Columbia hosted their “Free Week” last semester. I didn’t even know that this Devine Street studio had even existed until then! Once I took my first class, I was hooked.

barre3 is not your typical barre studio. The instructors combine strength conditioning, cardio, and mindfulness for a full-body workout unlike any other. I’ll admit โ€” the classes are not easy! Without a doubt, you will find me wringing my hair out with sweat mid-class. But I leave every session more confident and content than when I came. Beyond strength training and cardio, barre3 is also about being present in the moment and forming a mind-body connection. More than just a great workout, the barre3 Downtown Columbia studio is filled with women who push each other to do their best. I have felt like I was in the right place since my very first class, despite the fact that I literally had no idea what I was doing. Whether it’s your first class, or your 500th class, you will be greeted with a smile and other ladies who will support you.

I see women create friendships, cry at the end of class when they have an emotional release, get stronger mentally and physically and gain confidence.

I am able to put classes right into my calendar on my phone and stick to them. The Columbia studio offers classes between 5:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., so no matter my school schedule, I am able to fit a workout in. I get sick less often (which you know is a big deal for a college kid) and have found myself feeling less guilty for eating foods that I love. The mind-body connection that I have been missing in college has been restored, and I can truthfully say that I’ve found myself again.

One of the best things of all? barre3 offers you a first free class at their studio. If you are hesitant or weary about trying a new workout, I urge you to take your first class at barre3 Columbia โ€” you will not regret it. Your entire view on working out and moving your body may even be changed.
