Our generation has proven itself to be somewhat groundbreaking, rejecting societal norms and the connotations that come with them. Now more than ever it does not matter how you identify or who you love, just the freedom to truly accept our innermost selves. However, while this mindset has definitely embedded itself into the minds of most, some people still struggle with the idea of breaking the mold. There is so much to be learned when stepping out of our comfort zones, but how can we expect to progress as a whole if no one is willing to discard these labels?
There is no doubt that one of the most vital stereotypes our generation has proven to be irrelevant is the idea of a “real” man. Someone who represents strength, hard-work, and more often than not tends to be emotionally aloof because it’s apparently incomprehensible for a man to show emotion. Time has proven just how toxic this mentally is, the idea that a man is lesser if he cries or wears a color that might be associated with feminine tastes is out of date and damaging. Gender is not exclusive, but society’s idea of a proper man can negatively impact those who desire individuality and self-expression.Â
The risks and rewards
These same ideals play into the role of sexism, the concept of a man having feminine attributes or style associates them with the stigma of being weak, similar to the stigma most women are forced to face on a daily basis. Just the act of being “too emotional” or preferring shopping over sports immediately triggers society’s need to criticize. When one of the most famous men in the world wore a dress on the cover of Vogue, many were outraged. However, despite those who took his wardrobe as a personal offense, many celebrated the cover. Finally, there was representation for men who did not have to be homosexual to enjoy feminine activities or accessories. Not only was it a win for those who have suffered for embracing their true selves, but also for women everywhere.
The trend of toxic masculinity has long reigned over society but it finally seems a new era is being born. With the embrace of femininity in men comes an understanding, the rise of human acceptance brings a newfound awareness in men as well. They are finally aware of the struggles of being a woman, dealing with judgement and the constant notion of being weak and underestimated. Throughout the struggles these men face, the reward is exponentially greater because through their example, others around the world who struggle with their identity have the comfort of knowing they are not alone. Â
