I don’t know about y’all, but one of my favorite parts about the University of South Carolina is our fantastic and state-of-the-art athletics program. The amount of pride each student, alumni, donor and fan has for the Gamecocks is something indescribable and truly inspiring. Win or lose — the Gamecock spirit never faults.
The Gamecocks across all sports have played very well this 2021-2022 school year, however one of my favorite teams to watch is the USC Women’s Basketball Team. They are truly awe-inspiring and 100% bad*ss.Â
Led by powerhouse coach and Olympic superstar Dawn Staley, the team is currently ranked 1st in SEC conference as well as #1 overall in the NCAA. They are truly amazing to watch, and as a Gamecock, I am so thankful that all of us students get the opportunity to attend all home games for free at the beautiful Colonial Life Arena, AKA the CLA <3.Â
The team recently just held their final home game of the regular season on Sunday, February 20, where College GameDay came and reported. South Carolina joins UCONN and Tennessee as the third school to be a host of the College GameDay Program. The five Gamecock Seniors (Destiny Littleton, Elysa Wesolek, Victaria Sexton, Destanni Henderson, and LeLe Grissett) were honored at the game.Â
In other recent news, Aliyah Boston was named a candidate for the National Player of the Year. This is a huge accomplishment for her, Dawn Staley and her fellow Gamecocks. Aliyah Boston’s stats have been off the charts this season, so there is no doubt in my mind that she deserves this honor and has the support of every single Gamecock behind her.Â
While I am no basketball expert in statistics of the game, I wanted to link an article I loved to read that really helped me understand the projected logistics of the upcoming tournament. Being a Connecticut native myself, and growing up rooting for the UCONN Huskies, it has been quite interesting seeing how the seasons play out for the rivals, and how each team may do at the tournament come March.
I can’t wait to watch! (But Go Gamecocks though, of course!) :)
