England is in mourning after the sad news was released yesterday that charity fundraiser Stephen Sutton had passed away, aged 19.
The incredible teenager was diagnosed with bowel cancer aged 15, and this tragically became terminal as the cancer spread through his body. Sutton raised over 3.2 million for charity, and since his death yesterday afternoon, a further £400,000 has been donated to his cause.
When diagnosed with cancer, Sutton drew up a bucket-list of things to achieve, including a sky-dive and raising £10,000 for charity.
But as an image of the inspirational teen giving the thumbs up from his hospital bed became viral on social media websites Facebook and Twitter, thousands of supporters donated to his cause and were full of praise for Sutton and his incredible hard work.
This included many celebrities, including Prime Minister David Cameron who referred to Sutton as ‘absolutely inspiring’. Comedian Jason Manford was so taken by the teen’s plight that he threw a charity gig in aid of Sutton’s cause. Speaking of Stephen, Manford said he:
‘was the most inspiring person I’ve ever met, and touched more lives than he will ever know’.
Yesterday evening, Ms Sutton paid tribute to her amazing son, saying he died peacefully in his sleep, and that her ‘heart is bursting with pride but breaking with pain for my courageous, selfless, inspirational son’. Thousands of well-wishers took to Facebook and Twitter to pay their respects to brave Stephen, and as mentioned above, many have since donated to his cause.
This special edition of Campus Celebrity is devoted to a celebration of Stephen’s incredible achievements. The world truly has lost a shining star, and Stephen was an inspirational, brave and selfless person who will be missed by so many. His legacy will live on through the amazing work he has done for charity, and in the hearts and minds of the British public, whose lives he has truly touched. Everyone at HerCampus Southampton would like to send their love to Stephen’s family in this difficult time, and pay tribute to an incredible person who is an inspiration to us all.
RIP Stephen Sutton xx
