5 Must-See Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

Are you a movie buff or an occasional cinemagoer? Do old flicks bore you or are you a fan of the classics? Either way, there are many must-see movies out there that are crucial to becoming a truly cultured viewer. I’ve highlighted five less prominent movies that are definitely on the list.

1. Good Will Hunting

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, a dynamic duo, teamed up to write Good Will Hunting, which features Will Hunting, an unschooled genius with a jarring past and extensive criminal record. While working as a janitor at MIT, Will’s unimaginable intelligence is discovered by Professor Gerald Lambeau, who takes Will under his wing to foster his talents.

Robin Williams also stars in one of his best roles as Will’s therapist, who attempts to drag him out of his hardened exterior. A dive into the drinking culture of the 20-somethings of South Boston, Good Will Hunting will tug at your heartstrings and toy with the provocative questions of purpose and destiny.

2. Far and Away

One of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s first dual appearances, Far and Away features a traditional love story with a whopping twist. The aristocratic Shannon Christie (Kidman) and the lower-class Joseph Donnelly (Cruise) are an unwillingly paired couple when they leave Shannon’s father’s land together. Forced to coexist, they must overcome their differences to survive.

As the two scrap for existence in the urban, immigrant-dominated, and unforgiving world of New York City, gaps are bridged to bring Shannon and Joseph together. A wonderful date-night flick, Far and Away will arouse the romantic spirits of a time before modern social amenities and will leave mouths gaping with its dramatic close.

3. Michael

John Travolta stars as Archangel Michael in this unexpectedly funny film, in which three reporters travel to investigate a rumor about an angel supposedly living in Texas. Expecting a hoax, the reporters, played by Andie McDowell, William Hurt and Bob Hoskins, are surprised to discover a person with large (and very much attached) angel-like wings.

Michael features their journey back to their publication’s offices, during which the not always angelic Michael works his magic on many of the people that they encounter, as well as the reporters themselves. Hilarious and surprisingly touching, Michael is perfect for an uplifting movie night.

4. The Hunt for Red October

This military drama will drag you to the depths of submarine warfare and US-Soviet tensions during the Cold War. The Hunt for Red October builds suspense and anticipation slower than some thrillers, so be warned – some patience is required. However, your brief endurance is sure to pay off, as The Hunt for Red October sucks you into the action, little by little.

Captain Marco Ramius, played by Sean Connery, is a decorated Soviet naval official who attempts to orchestrate the cunning defection of his submarine, the Red October. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) is an analyst who correctly theorizes that Ramius is trying to defect, despite military officials’ concerns about a rogue and violent Soviet submarine. Captain Ramius, pursued by the Soviets and suspiciously monitored by the Americans, attempts to make it safely to American shores, and you will cheer him on all the way.

5. A Few Good Men

A Few Good Men delves into the military world of naval law and court martials as Lieutenant Daniel Kaffe, played by Tom Cruise, is assigned to defend two Marines accused of murder. This gripping courtroom drama spectacularly unfolds, bringing the guilt of the two defendants into question, as well as the morality of their superiors at Guantanamo Bay.

Colonel Nathan Jessop, played by Jack Nicholson, is an arrogant and powerful antagonist, guaranteed to put up a good fight. Also featuring Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Kevin Pollack, A Few Good Men will leave you riveted and glued to the television, rooting on Kaffe and hoping that justice will prevail.

So next time you’re bored and looking for something to do, grab some popcorn and one of these classic flicks. You won’t be disappointed! Happy movie watching, my friends!
