What’s the best piece of advice you took away from Southern Miss preview over the summer? Work all day? Party all night? No. It was probably get involved! Being involved on campus has great benefits, and students who join organizations on campus are more likely to be successful in getting through college than those that don’t. With over 300 different organizations offered at Southern Miss, it is easy to find a group of people—whether big or small—with similar interests and goals in mind.
Meeting new people
As an out-of-state student, I came to Southern Miss knowing absolutely no one. I set out alone to fend for myself; I started to get involved in campus organizations and met lots of new people, which allowed me to make many new friends! Getting involved is a great way to meet people that you may not have met otherwise.
Improve social skills
Maybe you’re an awkward/shy person, or maybe you’re not necessarily the most outgoing. That’s okay! Part of being involved is learning how to interact with different people and break out of your shell. Joining an organization can help you to become more confident and comfortable in your own skin!
Build a foundation for the future
Every organization on campus has something to offer for every type of person! If you’re into politics, then the Student Government Association would be a great thing to look into. If you’re looking to get into journalism, try applying to The Southerner Yearbook, Student Printz or HerCampus.com. If you want to be an event planner someday, the Southern Miss Activities Council has great opportunities for you! There’s something for everyone, and with over 300 organizations on campus, it’s impossible not to find your niche!
Gives you something to do
Being involved keeps you on your toes and always gives you something to do during your free time. When ever your have downtime or feel like you have nothing to do, becoming a part of an organization on campus can fill that void!
Consider getting involved on your campus! It’s the best way to network, meet new friends and give yourself a break from the hustle and bustle of schoolwork!
