A Collegiette’s Guide to Handling Heartbreak

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

Ladies, we’ve all been in a relationship that seemed it would never end.  You know, the ones where you write “Mrs. Whoever” on your notebook, and you do everything together? I think it is safe to say that a lot of the time these relationships do, in fact, end.  If you’re dealing with heartbreak, here are some of the BEST things to do:

GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA SITES.

Let’s be honest.  When you and your man breakup, the first thing you want to do is check his Facebook and see if his relationship status has changed from “in a relationship” to “single.”  Then, you are steadily checking his recently tagged photos and status updates to see if he has been living it up with “the boys” or maybe even hanging out with that gross blonde that just so happens to live down the hall from you.  Whatever the case, nothing good can come from this.  You’re only going to upset yourself and maybe even do something you regret later on.  Checking his Facebook and Twitter will eventually drive you crazy, and before you know it, you’re the psycho, stalker ex-girlfriend that can’t get over the relationship.  Be a lady! Get off the social media, and go about your business.  You will feel better, and it will make getting over him so much easier!

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE.

It doesn’t matter who broke up with whom. Do not text him! I REPEAT: DO NOT TEXT HIM! You may feel like you have something to tell him, or you may just want him to think about you. However, this usually only makes matters worse, as you may become known as annoying or needy. Trust me, you do NOT want to be “that” girl.  You want to be a strong, independent young woman and keep your distance for a little bit.  If you get the urge to text or call him, text or call one of your girlfriends instead! They will understand and most likely invite you over for ice cream and a movie to try to help you get him off of your mind.

STAY BUSY!

If you spend your time alone in bed watching Netflix, you’re not getting anything accomplished.  Start to re-familiarize yourself with all the things you used to do before you and your guy started dating.  Start working out more, stay on top of your homework, go out with the girls, just do whatever you can to keep your mind off of the breakup.  The more time you spend with your friends and family doing your favorite things the easier it will be to love yourself and forget about why you’re sad in the first place.

RETAIL THERAPY.

This is a guaranteed way to put a smile on any collegiette’s face!  Take a day to yourself, and get your hair cut or styled.  Go get your nails done, or get a makeover at the MAC makeup counter at the mall.  Go to a few of your favorite stores, and grab a couple of cute dresses or that pair of shoes you have been dying for.  This is a great way to feel beautiful and boost your confidence!

NO SAD, SLOW MUSIC.

Listening to the sad country music has to stop! Also, no more listening to “Someone Like You” by Adele.  You’ve got to listen to more uplifting music.  Try burning yourself a CD with songs like “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson.  Songs like this will help you feel independent and proud of who you are.  You should also put more playful songs onto your playlist that make you happy like “Good Feeling” by FloRida, “Domino” by Jessie J. or “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera.  Songs like this will instantly bring your spirits up and keep you in that ultimate feel good mood!

It’s not easy to have your heartbroken. If you follow these steps, though, you should start to feel better in no time. Keep your head up, and do the things you love most.  Don’t lose sight of who you are over a silly break up!  He’ll be old news before you know it.
