How to Keep Morals in a Sexualized World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

In a time when you can become famous by filming a sex tape, a young girl has to wonder… How can I keep my morals in such a sexualized world? Well, I offer some ways to help you.

First off, let’s trim down how much television you watch. Reality TV is raunchy, catty, and sometimes embarrassing, yet entertaining.

Shows like the Bad Girls Club, Basketball Wives and Jersey Shore have some of the highest ratings in television. All these shows feature women gossiping, fighting, and being promiscuous. Whether we believe it or not these shows are affecting us.

Before we realize it, we’re imitating Snooki and JWoww. Instead of watching 2-3 reality shows a night, try 2-3 a week. Stop watching others live their life. Go live yours!

In order to preserve your morals, hang out with people who have similar morals. Michelle Obama isn’t chillin’ with Lindsay Lohan. So why would you, an awesome college student, hang with those not on your level?

If you’re energetic and fun, hang out with energetic and fun people. If you’re creative, find creative friends. If you’re conservative, throw an awesome tea party.

Maybe the most important way to preserve your morals is to be your self! You’re amazing. There’s no like you, so don’t let a “sexualized” world influence your morals.

Even if you’re a sexual person naturally, don’t feel like you must be overly sexual to keep up. Just be you. Dress how you want to dress and speak in a way you feel appropriate.

Don’t handle situations in a way you feel someone expects you to. Handle it how you see fit. Don’t let the world “sexualize” you or your morals.
