10 Ways to Make the Most of Winter Quarter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SPU chapter.

I don’t know about you, but once fall quarter is over I begin to dread the coming of winter quarter. While winter break is great because it is relaxing, yet fast paced amidst the holiday season, once January rolls around, there is nothing to look forward to until spring.  The weather is dreary (am I right fellow Seattleites?) and it’s really easy to stay inside and cozy up with Netflix. However, with all the extra time most of us have during winter quarter, there are numerous ways to make use of it! Come spring quarter, you will be wishing you had more time in the day to get these things done.

  1. Plan epic spring break trip

As I mentioned before, I think the worst part about winter quarter is that there are no breaks or holidays to look forward to in the near future. March rolls around sooner than we think and then suddenly it’s time for spring break. It’s always fun (and beneficial) to plan ahead for a trip to have something to look forward to. Really take the time to plan, research and budget so that you have an epic trip to look forward to.

  1. Get more sleep

Now I don’t mean sleep until mid afternoon until you are forced to get out of bed to go to class. I just mean that as college students, most of us don’t get enough sleep that we need. Winter quarter is the perfect time to go to bed early or take a power nap and not feel guilty about it.

  1. Connect with old friends

Amidst the excitement of coming back to campus from summer and getting back into the school routine, sometimes it’s hard to be intentional with friends. Make plans with friends and check in with old ones. Instead of wishing it wasn’t raining, go occupy a table in a coffee shop and catch up with a friend.

  1. Work on New Years resolutions

So we probably all made a new years resolution: get toned, drink more water, go the gym…the list goes on. But now is the time to work on that resolution! Focus on one positive thing to work towards every week. Try to fit it into your daily schedule and soon it will become habit.

  1. Embrace the weather

Yup, you read it right. Instead of wishing away your days and hoping for sun, just

Embrace the overcast, rainy day! Don’t let the rain change your plans, just change your outfit so that you are prepared for it. Fun fact: did you know that overcast days are the best days to take pictures because of the natural lighting?

  1. Go to a concert

It’s a fun, indoor activity and a great way to bond with other people. While some concert tickets can be expensive, it’s even fun to go to a show at a small venue and experience a new band you haven’t heard of before.

  1. Re-design room

It’s true what they say about how a room affects your mood. Make your room light and fun if the weather is getting you down, or string some lights over your window for a cozy feel. However you decide to redecorate, you’ll feel accomplished and organized afterwards.

  1. Plan

Sounds daunting, right? Bring your computer to a coffee shop and make a list of possible post-college jobs you would want. Work on your resume or look into skills that you should improve upon. Take the time to really plan for your future after college and see what you need to do in order to work towards your goals. You will feel so good afterwards. I promise.

  1. Take a day trip

Don’t be confined by the normal daily activities that Seattle has to offer. Take a ferry, go to Portland, shop in Vancouver or drive to a new area to go hiking. There are mountains, towns, shops and restaurants everywhere in Washington and beyond that you probably haven’t explored yet.

  1. Focus on your studies

I know this doesn’t sound exciting, but I have found that my grades are actually the best during winter quarter. Since you have nothing better to do..why not study? Use the excuse to stay in side, load up on coffee and crank out all of your schoolwork. It will be well worth it when you start seeing your grades.
