Okay, I’ll admit it. I have strategically avoided accessories for most of my life. I like to dress very simply, and I think sometimes accessories clutter an outfit. What’s wrong with a simple outfit? Everyone seems to be going back to the basics recently and I have been LIVING for it. Finally, something I can get behind. So, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. In fact, I’m here to evangelize. The skinny scarf. It’s going to completely revamp your closet. It’s amazing, and I’m going to tell you why.
The skinny scarf began gaining attention when celebrities began wearing it early in 2015. It was identified as an up and coming trend for spring 2015 and it continued gaining popularity through the end of the year. I didn’t realize the skinny scarf was going to be my new favorite thing until I began watching “Kaileemckenzie’s” YouTube channel. I have been subscribed to her since I was in high school, (she was in middle school yikes I’m old) and she just moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her style has evolved since she moved there from West Virginia, and I have loved her content recently. One of my recent favorites from her is this video, “10 Layered Looks.” I would recommend checking out her channel since she inspired me to hop on the trendy express, one stop. Skinny scarf town. Yeah I went there.

So, taking inspiration from this girl who is younger and infinitely cooler than me already, I decided to invest in a skinny scarf myself. I say “invest” lightly because it was only ten dollars, but it has been the best ten dollars I’ve spent on any clothing item recently. This is the scarf I bought from Lulu’s online. It’s so soft and the perfect length for anyone. I was surprised at how great the quality was when I received it in the mail.

This trend is taking its trickling over from New York, but soon we will be seeing every woman in Seattle sporting one. So get on this skinny scarf while you still can!
Here are a few different ways you can wear a skinny scarf:
- Wear it draped over your shoulder like Alexa Chung. I wish I were Alexa Chung… maybe if I wear my skinny scarf like her I’ll siphon some of her style power.
- Wear it wrapped around your neck in the fashion of a thicker scarf. It won’t keep you warm, but a stylish woman never gets cold right?
- Wear it tied around your neck as a choker… and then cry and wish you were BFFs with Karl Lagerfeld like Lily Rose is.
4. Tie the skinny scarf around your neck to elevate a simple outfit and make you feel like you should be on a fabulous yacht. Look at you. You’re so stylish. Go live your dream on that boat, you.
- In a rush? Literally just throw the skinny scarf on. You’re good to go. I’m now obsessed with you.
You’ll be seeing me sporting my black skinny scarf all around campus most days, unapologetically. I’m interested in what the response will be here at SPU. I wore my skinny scarf to Target the other day in my sad, unstylish home neighborhood and I got a few weird looks and stares. Someone around here has to push the envelope of style I guess! If you have a skinny scarf tell us on our Her Campus social media what you think about it!
(I’m kind of thinking about buying a black beret too. Are berets having a moment? Do I just want to be Parisian and eat bread and cheese all day? Maybe.)
