When you hear of a buzz surrounding an eighteen-year old acoustic singer-songwriter from Nottingham, Jake Bugg is most likely the name that springs to mind. In keeping with the fickle and fast-paced nature of the music industry, however, there’s already a new kid on the block. Callum Burrows goes under the stage name of Saint Raymond, derived from the street he grew up in and his grandfather’s surname. His sound is a synthesis of indie rock and rhythmic pop with melodic guitar accompaniments and he’s recently signed to Asylum records, the home of Ed Sheeran.
Whilst the music is deceptively upbeat, his lyrics are rather more poignant, with the track As We Are Now warning us that ‘we may never have another like today’. Equally, his emotions are well ahead of his years as he offers to ‘give it all to make you feel complete’, in Fall At Your Feet.
The young singer/songwriter could be perhaps filed amongst the likes of Bastille, Vampire Weekend and Little Comets, influences that emerge when listening to his EP. Tipped for big things by new music connoisseur Zane Lowe, Saint Raymond has consequently shot up the iTunes chart and supported American band Haim on tour. His latest single Young Blood is out now and, if you’re looking for something fresh and exciting, it’s well worth a listen.
