11 Sex Positive Songs by Female Artists You Need to Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Edward's chapter.

To remove the “dirty” stigma from sex, sex positivity is important. What better way to practice sex positivity than to jam out to some awesome tunes?

1.“Miracle Gro” – The Buttress

This badass female rapper’s two minute song is an unapologetic ode to her sex life. The lines in the song that really illustrate her feelings toward sex include, “Yeah it’s true, I’m a slut, don’t give a fuck,” and “cuz dudes ain’t shit but balls and dicks.” The Buttress is not afraid to get down and dirty, and she’s certainly not afraid to tell the world about it.

2. “Blow” – BeyoncĂ©

BeyoncĂ© has never shied away from speaking about sex or mentioning it in her songs. Her self-titled album is a great example of this. “Blow,” on the album, is uncommon in that it talks about receiving oral sex; a woman receiving oral sex is somewhat taboo in music, and Queen Bey breaks that boundary with this song.

3. “Fucked My Way Up To the Top” – Lana del Rey

In this song, Lana exudes confidence about herself and her sexuality. She makes it known that “This is my show” and I don’t think anyone would disagree.

4. “Get On Your Knees” – Nicki Minaj ft. Ariana Grande

Nicki Minaj has always spoken up against sexism in the music industry, as she has made enormous success in a genre that is male-dominated. Nicki uses her status as a platform to support other women in the industry. Especially since she is known for being “raunchy” she made a point of saying, “Women should be allowed to be as hardcore and sexual as they want because men do it all the time.” In this song, Nicki and Ariana Grande are sexually dominant, hence the authoritative song title, “Get On Your Knees.”

5. “Do What U Want” – Lady Gaga

Gaga’s song is essentially about hooking up and not getting attached. It’s not out of spite and it’s not about hoping for a relationship; it’s about being physical and that’s all she wants. Gaga stresses her independence when she says, “You don’t own my life” and she repeats throughout the song: “You can’t have my heart / And you won’t use my mind but / Do what you want with my body.” Yaaaaassssss Gaga!

6. “I Do Not Hook Up” – Kelly Clarkson

An important thing to remember about being sex positive is that it’s okay to not want to be involved with hookup culture, or to not have sex at all. Kelly Clarkson makes it clear that she doesn’t hook up in this song, and she prefers to go slow – which is perfectly fine!

7. “S&M” – Rihanna

In typical Rihanna fashion, this fast-paced song doesn’t hold back. There’s no mistaking–Rihanna loves sex.

8. “Sex Yeah” – Marina and the Diamonds

This song is more about the use of sex in the media more than anything else. “If sex in our society (didn’t tell a girl who she would be)/‘Cause all my life I’ve tried to fight what history has given me.” Marina and the Diamond’s album “Electra Heart” is social commentary disguised as sugary pop music and it’s amazing.

9. “Let’s Talk About Sex” – Salt-n-Pepa

Flashback! This is definitely a classic but it also has a strong message. The song recognizes that society doesn’t want them to talk about sex since, “People might misunderstand what we’re trying’ to say, you know?” But, of course, they do anyway. “Don’t decoy, devoid, or make void the topic / Cuz that ain’t gonna stop it / Now we talk about sex on the radio and video shows / Many will know anything goes / Let’s tell it is, and how it could be / How it was, and of course, how it should be” Basically, this should be played and analyzed in sex education classes.

10. “Birth In Reverse” – St. Vincent

This song isn’t about sex, but the casual mention of masturbation is worth noting. Female masturbation is definitely taboo, even outside the music industry. PSA: masturbation is normal and healthy.

11. “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” – Sophie B. Hawkins

This song is about longing and sexual desire. Sophie B. Hawkins sings, “If I was your girl, believe me / I’d turn on the Rolling Stones / We could groove along and feel much better.”
