With the March primaries just around the corner, the competition between Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont) and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the democratic presidential nominee has been heating up. And I mean majorly.Â
Senator Sanders has sparked major interest in younger generation voters. He’s the first major candidate with socialist ideals; and he’s not afraid to admit it. Hillary Clinton is still the party’s front running candidate in the polls, though not by much.Â
But what do both of these candidates have to say about women’s issues? And where exactly do they stand on things like abortion and the pay gap?Â
You can find plenty of articles online claiming that one candidate is better than the other for women’s issues. But it’s not as cut and dry as reading one article and calling it a done deal. Below are some of the latest statements from both candidates in regards to their beliefs. Deciding who the stronger candidate is in regards to women’s issues is totally up to you.Â
Â
The Pay Gap:
- Bernie Sanders: Must pass pay equity for women workers
- Hillary Clinton: Must pass pay equity for women workers
Both support the Paycheck Fairness ActÂ
Â
Abortion:
- Both Sanders and Clinton support abortion rights for women
- Clinton is endorsed by Planned Parenthood
Â
Birth Control:
- Hillary Clinton consistently champions for access to birth control and called Hobby Lobby Decision “deeply disturbing”
- Bernie Sanders advocates to keep Planned Parenthood funded and condemned Republicans’ attempts to defund itÂ
Paid Leave:
- Hillary Clinton introduced a plan that would allow the caretaker (man or woman) of the household to take up to 12 weeks off
- Bernie Sanders supports the FAMILY Act and believes every citizen should be able to take up to 12 weeks offÂ
