Five years ago today, March 17th, 2015, Her Campus officially launched at St. John’s University. For five years, we have been bringing a new voice to our school campus and a space for women to express their thoughts and get questions answered about college, life, love, and career.
The 2019-20 school year was monumental for us – for the first time in our chapter’s history, we became recognized as an official campus club through Student Government, Incorporated! This was probably the biggest moment in my college career and I was ecstatic and relieved that we were able to get it done before the end of my time here. I’ve always believed in what Her Campus was all about, and for someone who is both going into the media field post-graduation and is all about women’s empowerment, I really wanted to bring the club into a wider view. Providing an outlet for college women and the opportunity to gain real-world media experience was the entire reason for what this club has become today, and I’m proud of every moment.
The road to where we are today was a long one. For two years, Loraina (the campus correspondent from 2017-19) and I worked to rebuild the chapter, as have her and the other CCs before my time. As many other student leaders know, getting a club off the ground is a lot of work – you need people you can trust to do their job, ways to spread the word without breaking rules, and finding people who are actually interested in joining. We’ve had e-boards be built and collapse, missed opportunities to go through SGI’s Power 2 Organize, and struggled to meet our weekly content requirements from Her Campus headquarters. By the end of 2018-19, we knew we had just enough of a stable foundation for me to continue as chapter President and finish what we started. And here we are!

Ending my time with Her Campus will be a bittersweet feeling, but I’m confident in the future of this club. I’m grateful for the people I’ve met through this club, watching so many of our members grow, and for those who weren’t a part of Her Campus but still supported us all. I can’t thank my e-board enough for showing up during the tough Power 2 Organize process, we couldn’t have done it without you! A very special shoutout to Chanelle, my Co-CC and Editor-in-Chief for making our content evolve to what it is today and being my right hand for the last year!
To Loraina, Ana, Lucy, and all the past HC members, thank you for keeping the club afloat and starting it all! I hope you like where the chapter has gone. I’m thankful that there were incredible women running it all before me, and I look forward to the future CCs and e-board making things bigger and better (P.S., HC should DEFINITELY bring back Campus Cutie).
To many more years and many more articles!
HCXO,
