Role in Her Campus: Writer + Marketing/Publicity committee member
A word From Leah: “Hello Everyone, I am Leah Minerve, a current sophomore Journalism major, and Public Relations minor. My interests include self-care, hanging out with friends, going shopping, and of course, binging my favorite show, Insecure.”
What do you appreciate the most about being apart of Her Campus?
“I appreciate the Her Campus culture. We are constantly surrounded by positive, creative, and intelligent ladies who are welcoming and encouraging. I have made close connections through this process and have enjoyed writing and sharing my knowledge with others.”
What lessons have you learned during freshman year that you have begun to use throughout your sophomore year of college?
“My biggest lesson from freshman year was to never settle for less. Often, women are told to water themselves down to be more palatable for their audience. However, I believe always living in truth, holding yourself in high esteem, and never giving up your integrity differentiates you from others. I often adhere to these principles in my sophomore year in classroom settings, at work, and while meeting new people. Overall, this lesson has allowed me to step into womanhood with more grace and intentionality than ever before.”
What is your dream job or occupation? Name a well-known figure or celebrity that embodies what you would like to be in your future career.
“My dream job is to be a PR agent for a media network. Maya Angelou is a known figure that embodies who I would like to be in my career. Although she was not in the same field as me, the way she graced writing and integrity in her career are values that I also want to hold myself to professionally. Often people would try to diminish her light, but she was resilient and classy, never stepping out of character when asked about her writings and her passion for what she did always shined through. She embodies in many ways the woman I am working to become both professionally and socially, never diminishing my values for others, vocalizing my passions, and being resilient through every obstacle.”Â
What skills have you developed while being apart of Her Campus that you would use during your future career?
“I have developed editing skills from Her Campus, which is essential for my future career in PR. Being polished and precise are great qualities that distinguish your writing from others. Thankfully for me, Her Campus served as a motivator to continue pushing me to be a better student, writer, and woman.”Â
What are the top 5 places in the world that you’d love to visit and why?
“My top 5 places I’d like to visit are Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Africa is my ultimate travel location because my identity is rooted in African culture, style, cuisine, and experiences. I look forward to one day returning to the motherland to get in touch with my roots, ancestry, and people.”
What are your top 3 favorite movies of all time? (Who are some famous actors we may recognize while watching them?)
“My favorite movies are Love Jones starring Nia Long, The Devil Wears Prada starring Anne Hathaway, and Sex in the City starring Sarah Jessica Parker.”Â
What’s your zodiac sign, and would you say that you accurately represent your sign? What other signs do you get along with the most?
“I am an Aries, and yes, my zodiac matches me in some ways, but not all. I am fiery, outspoken, friendly, kind, and unfortunately impulsive. I get along best with Aquarius, Libra, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Gemini. Some of my closest friends are these signs, and there is excellent compatibility.”
If you could have dinner with one person in the world to discuss a way to create change in society, who would it be and why?
“Dr. Umar Johnson would be one person in the world I would like to discuss ways to change society with because he pledges to expand Black Nationalism, which is a topic that I’m incredibly inspired by. He embodies Black nationalism, African American pride, and a return of African ancestry for the Black American. He prides himself on helping African American people reclaim their heritage and know their history, which I believe would inevitably help our society be more progressive and knowledgeable.”
