From Mom’s Lips to Our Ears

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter.

“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” – Abraham Lincoln

I have nothing in common with Lincoln except for this and the love of our great country. My mom is extraordinary. Everything she does, she does for the sake of others. She has a beautiful heart.

When I was thirteen she wrote me a letter. It was a sort of instructional guide on how to be a strong, positive, goodhearted woman. I came across it a few weeks ago while rummaging through old photos and sketchbooks. I want to share her wisdom with you. Some of her points may seem trivial (like #2 and #7), but they were included in the letter for a reason. Read and reflect carefully.

“Marla—

I want you to know that I believe in you and I think you can do whatever you want. Dad and I will always be there for you and we will always be on your side… no matter what. As you grow up, try to keep the following things in mind…

1. Try not to hit any other people–boys or girls.

2. Never be any boys ‘booty call’.

3. Go to college so you can support yourself.

4. Don’t waste your time on Facebook–stay active and talk to people face to face.

5. Believe in true love. Find a man who treats you well.

6. Be yourself. Those women in magazines are airbrushed.

7. Always read the instructions…your father doesn’t do that.

8. Don’t judge people by their looks or money.

9. Don’t take people for granted.

10. Set goals for yourself.

11. Look for the good in everybody– but beware of evil in the world.

12. You should never confuse abuse (physical or mental) with love. Violent behavior and mean comments do not mean that he cares.

13. NEVER get into a car with a drunk person– you can always call us. No questions asked, no punishment.

Now, take the lead, girlie. You’re awesome, smart, funny, and sexy. Don’t forget it.

I love you,

Momma”

Simple, I know, but also priceless. I hope that you’ve gained something, no matter how small, from reading her advice to me. And here’s a little of my own advice to you. Appreciate your mother or whoever else is there to love you. Those people in your life may drive you crazy at times, but they only do it because they care. If you are lucky enough to be loved in a genuine, unconditional way then you should love that way in return.
