How to Make a Good First Impression at a Summer Job/Internship: Tips from SLU Alums

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

As the last weeks of the spring semester are approaching, many students will start thinking about their summer jobs or internships. I reached out to a few SLU alums, including some of my relatives, and asked them for tips on how to make a good first impression as an undergraduate in any work environment. Here is what they said:

“Always arrive a few minutes early.” –Kay Childs ‘89

“Remember that being early is being on time. Never be late to your job.” -Hank Wilson ‘89

“Do research ahead of time on the company you are interviewing or working for, and more importantly, about the person you are meeting with or who is advising you.” –Bruce Benedict ‘60

“Offer to help out with any tasks, even if they are not what you were hired to do.” –Kay Childs ‘89

“Have questions prepared, and ask what it is that you can do to make the summer a success for the company or organization you are working for.” –Whit Benedict ‘89

“Make eye contact and give a firm handshake; a little self-confidence goes a long way.” –Abby Daley ‘90

“Make sure you that you fully understand the tasks you are given to do, and if not, then ask questions!” –Kay Childs ‘89

“Dress properly for the position that you are in.” –Bruce Benedict ‘60

“Leave your phone in the car!” –Abby Daley ‘90

“Show up on time looking well-rested and put together. This is my advice: showing up is half the battle.” -Peter Forelli ‘89

Best of luck to all those with a job or internship this summer. As with anything, make the best of your experience and bring what you learned with you upon returning to SLU!
