The limited places and options to eat at St. Lawrence can get old quickly, so over my time at SLU my friends and I have come up with creative ways to make eating at the pub a little more enjoyable. We call our creations and tricks “pub hacks.”
1.     Ask for an egg white omelet
Change it up and ask for an egg white omelet instead of a regular one! Also try different cheese with omelets; I always ask for cheddar or feta.
2. Â Â Â Â Bagelry Bagel
Most mornings, by the chili, there is a rack filled with fresh bagels from the Bagelry inside the Pub. All you have to do is write on a piece of paper: toasted bagel (I recommend asking for it extra toasted) and then place that on top of the bagel and put it all where orders come out. It’s so easy, but surprisingly a lot of people don’t know it’s something you can do. This is perfect for when you really need a filling breakfast but don’t feel like going all the way into town to get something.
3. Â Â Â Â Pesto
In my friend group, pesto is basically the equivalent to holy water. We put it on everything and it takes any meal from basic to gourmet. Personally, I like to put it on egg sandwiches, broccoli, and mix it in with the Italian dressing for salads. Â
4. Â Â Â Â Frozen/microwavable food
If you are ever craving pad thai but don’t want to drive all the way to Potsdam, or you want pasta but aren’t in the mood to go to Dana, check out the microwaveable food in the pub. There is a microwave next to where you pick up coffee orders, so you can cook it and eat it with your friends in the Pub. If you are really in the mood for a home-cooked tasting meal, I recommend getting a microwaveable pasta and then order chicken and broccoli and mix it all together.
5. Â Â Â Â Ask for soy meat in replace of regular meat
As a vegetarian, for a while I felt like I had limited options to order at the Pub, but I have since found there are many soy meat options that you can get as a replacement for practically anything with meat in it. I know “soy meat” does not sound like the most appetizing thing, but when you want a more filling meal, its perfect. My favorite things to get is soy sausage in an egg sandwich, and a chicken pesto wrap with soy chicken.   Â
6. Â Â Â Â Mozzarella cheese in a quesadilla
This one is pretty self explanatory, but I like getting this with spinach, tomato, and a side of pesto (of course).
7. Â Â Â Â Salad to-go
This is a classic Pub hack, but if you have not tried it and have a few extra dining dollars to spare, I recommend getting a salad to-go. All you have to do is write whatever you want in a salad with “to-go” on the bottom on a piece of paper. Since they put in in a to-go box, the salad ends up being much bigger than if it wasn’t take out, and it makes mixing the dressing (and pesto) much easier.
8. Â Â Â Â Buy coffee from the refrigerator and ask for a cup of ice
I need a cup of coffee every day, but personally I think the iced coffee from the Pub is not the best. To get around this, I buy the bottled iced coffee from inside the Pub (my favorite is the Starbucks cold brew) and when I pay at the register I ask for a cup of ice. Then just pour the bottled coffee over the ice, and it’s like having a Starbucks in Canton!
