Cooking on Campus: Empty Tombs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Every family has their own cherished Easter food traditions, usually involving chocolate, eggs and more chocolate. As college students, we look forward to returning home and partaking in these traditions, reminding us of the good old days when we eagerly collected Easter eggs from our yards as children. While our outlook on these traditions has changed over the years, we still enjoy taking part in these traditions with our families.

This recipe was recommended to me by a friend as a easy Easter recipe. Sometimes called “Empty Tombs” to show their significance to Easter as a religious holiday, these Marshmallow Delights are essentially easy cinnamon rolls. According to the food blog, the-girl-who-ate-everything.com, (where I got this recipe from) these Empty Tombs are symbolic for celebrating Jesus’ resurrection at Easter. The ingredients can be viewed as symbols of the story of Jesus’ resurrection. The marshmallow melts when baking, leaving an empty tomb, just like Jesus’ resurrection left his tomb empty.

Marshmallows: body of Jesus
Melted butter: oils of embalming
Cinnamon sugar: spices used to anoint the body
Crescent Roll: the wrapping of Jesus’ body or the tomb
Oven: the tomb
Cavity in the bun: empty tomb

Empty Tombs are extremely easy, require few ingredients and are essentially college dorm friendly cinnamon rolls. The marshmallow is rolled in butter and cinnamon sugar, covered with a crescent roll and baked. While baking, the marshmallow melts, leaving a sugary sauce in the middle of the roll. These rolls are sinfully delicious, and seriously easy!

Empty Tombs:

Ingredients: 1 (8 ounce) package crescent roll

1/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

8 large marshmallows

1/4 cup butter, melted

Directions: Separate dough into 8 separate triangles.

Combine cinnamon and sugar to make cinnamon sugar mix.

Roll marshmallow in melted butter then cinnamon sugar mix, and place in crescent roll. Fold up edges of dough, making sure to seal edges well so marshmallows don’t escape.

Dip tops of crescent roll in butter & cinnamon sugar and place in muffin tins to bake.

Bake @ 375 for 13-15 minutes. Eat warm

Enjoy! :)
