Ole Entertainment: Fake TV Holidays You Should Actually Celebrate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hey Oles! With Thanksgiving behind us and only a few weeks until Christmas break, we are in the thick of the holiday season. One can never have too many things to celebrate though, right? Here are a few clever holidays made up by our favorite TV characters – try out some of their quirky ideas to add even more cheer to your life!

Festivus (Seinfeld)

If you’ve got a large aluminum pole and a pessimistic attitude, consider taking part in Festivus on December 23, a celebration popularized by a 1997 episode of Seinfeld. The holiday is centered around the “Airing of Grievances,” in which everybody tells each other the ways they have been disappointed in him or her over the past year, and the “Feats of Strength,” when the head of the household must be wrestled and pinned to the floor.

Treat Yo Self Day (Parks and Recreation)

The best part about Treat Yo Self Day is that it can literally take place any day you want. Get a bad score on a test? Go buy yourself that cute dress you’ve had your eye on. Didn’t get that internship you wanted? Go get a massage. Just feel like treating yo self? Now you have your excuse.

Chrismukkuh (The O.C.)

Brought to you by Seth Cohen from The O.C., Chrismukkuh combines Christmas and Hannukkuh to create one big holiday extravaganza. Order some Chinese takeout and spend the night in watching It’s a Wonderful Life and Fiddler on the Roof, after setting up the Christmas tree and your menorah. Enjoy getting showered in presents for nine days!

Galentine’s Day (Parks and Recreation)

Who needs boys on Valentine’s Day when you’ve got your ladies? Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating your best girls, so leave the men at home and treat each other to facials and hand-crocheted flower pens. If you’re really feeling ambitious, write a personalized 5,000 word essay to each of your girlfriends describing how awesome she is.

Free Day (Spongebob Squarepants)

Black Friday is great and all, but the best day to go shopping according to Spongebob is actually March 8, because everything is free! Although this holiday is widely celebrated in Bikini Bottom, please ask store owners above sea level if they are participating before actually taking anything.
