StO-Style: Denim Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hi fashionistas!

Let’s talk denim! From the different styles, figure-enhancing features and various care-tips, there is a lot to know about your jeans. Let’s face it, jeans are expensive. It is important to pick the right denim for your body and take care of them so they last for years to come. So, become friends with your jeans by following some of these denim tips!

Different Styles

There are endless options when it comes to choosing the perfect pair of jeans. Here are a few jean styles that are trending now:

The Skinny Jean

Currently, the most in-style trend is the skinny jean. These jeans will fit tightly from the waist, through the leg and down to the ankle. You can spice up your skinny jean by trying a cropped style where the cuff will hit right at the ankle. These jeans will be flattering with virtually any top and they won’t bunch-up when you tuck them into your riding boots! If you’re looking to invest in a new pair of jeans, I would recommend trying out skinnies!

The Boy-Jean

Boy-jeans add a stylized element to an outfit that is slouchy yet tasteful. Boy-jeans have a relaxed fit through the whole leg and can come in cropped forms. These jeans pair perfectly with an easy tee or a white button-up. Adding the right accessories, like glasses, necklaces or lip color, can enhance a boy-jean outfit with a more feminine style.

The High-Rise

Don’t confuse high-rise jeans with your vision of “mom jeans”. High-rise jeans are extremely stylish and add an element of elegance. Also, if you’ve ever had the problem of “the gap” at the back waistband, having the extra height in the back prevents this from happening.

Figure Enhancers

We all want to look and feel great in out jeans, right? Well, here are a few tips to help you look and feel your best when picking out jeans.

First, always try on one size smaller than you normally would. Bring multiple sizes into the fitting room with you to be sure the fit is right. Typically, brands try and put a bit of stretch into their denim, so they will give a little bit after the first wear. You want to be sure that after a few wears, they still fit just right. You don’t want your jeans to stretch-out too much throughout the day!

Also, look for denim with a deep yoke. Wait, what? A yoke? Yes! A yoke is the horizontal seam that runs below your belt loops, but above your jean pockets. The deeper the yoke is, or the more the seam dips down, the more flattering it is for your behind!

Lastly, if you are looking for a flattering pair of jeans, try a dark wash. The dark wash makes the leg look long and lean. As an added bonus, dark denim looks great with almost anything. They are the perfect starting point for any outfit.

Denim Care Tips

Here are a few denim care tips to make your jeans last long and look like new!

  • Don’t wash your jeans too often. To be honest, you rarely need to wash your jeans. By continually washing and drying your jeans, they will fade and stretch. Keep the washing and drying to a minimum. However, if the thought of not washing your jeans for a few days on end is not appealing, try a light tumble dry in the dryer.
  • Always wash (and hang-dry) your jeans inside-out. This will prevent colors from fading and the denim from wearing.
  • Finally, wash colored and black denim separately for the first washes to avoid fading on other items. Hand washing and air drying might be a good option for the first few times you wash. The last thing you want is for your new denim to fade onto your other clothes!

Conquering denim can be difficult. Hopefully, these tips and suggestions will help you in your denim endeavors!
